Advocacy Counsel (Mid-Level or Senior-Level)

The International Corporate Accountability Roundtable (ICAR) is a civil society organization based in Washington, D.C. committed to ending corporate abuse of people and the planet. As a coalition of 40+ member and partner organizations, ICAR advocates for real protections and strong enforcement of the law to protect the public by enacting reasonable safeguards against corporate abuse, protecting those who speak out against corporate wrongdoing, and combating the rise of the corporate state. ICAR challenges governments to engage and lead in the international arena, set conditions in the market, and ensure legal accountability and access to remedy.

About the role

The Advocacy Counsel is responsible for leading ICAR’s initiatives to build and implement frameworks for the prevention and/or remediation of business-related human rights violations; managing project budgets; participating in project-level and overall strategy setting; and publicly representing ICAR in relevant settings. The Advocacy Counsel reports to and collaborates with the Executive Director.

This position is posted at two levels. Level placement will be based on experience and qualifications and will be determined during the selection process.

Location: Remote with some travel to in-person meetings and events

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Advocacy and Stakeholder Engagement
  • Conduct high-level advocacy and build partnerships with government bodies, civil society organizations, national human rights institutions, businesses, investor groups, and institutions at the national, regional, and international levels;
  • Develop position statements and advocacy strategies to support ICAR initiatives;
  • Serve as an external facing communicator on area of work, including by presenting on ICAR’s work in various fora; and
  • Closely collaborate with members, partners, allies, and consultants on ICAR’s advocacy and campaigns.
  • Experience in federal procurement policy is strongly desired.
• Legal Research and Analysis
  • Conduct and oversee in-depth legal research and analysis in relation to ICAR projects;
  • Draft memoranda and briefings on key legal and policy questions;
  • Analyze, evaluate, and draft legislative and regulatory text;
  • Develop tools, resources, and guidance materials to assist governments and other stakeholders in addressing business-related human rights challenges.
• Project Management and Oversight
  • Build and implement ICAR’s initiatives to prevent and/or remediate business-related human rights violations;
  • Assist in the development of project budgets and manage project budgets;
• Organizational Planning and Fundraising
  • Participate in organizational planning and fundraising activities;
  • Participate in the planning and execution of the ICAR Annual Meeting;
  • Support developing grant applications and grant reports;
  • Support building and maintaining relationships with funders; and
  • Manage internship and fellowship programs including the recruitment process, onboarding, supervising interns and fellows, and conducting evaluations.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree or foreign equivalent required;
• U.S. bar membership strongly preferred;
• Must be legally able to work in the United States;
• 1-4 years (mid-level) or 4 - 7 years (senior level) of legal and/or policy professional experience required;
• Demonstrated commitment to human rights and social justice, with experience in business and human rights advocacy, required;
• Supervision/managerial experience preferred;
• Experience working in coalition-based organizations desired;
• Human rights field experience desired.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• A portfolio demonstrating the ability to work efficiently, concisely, and clearly in a manner compelling to a broad array of stakeholders;
• Ability to manage multiple lines of work and consistently meet deadlines while remaining flexible in responding to pressing issues and developments;
• Highly committed to ICAR’s mission and human rights-based approach;
• Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, Google applications, Dropbox, etc.;
• Confidence and the ability to think and act proactively, quickly, and independently;
• Ability to develop and manage budgets and project work plans;
• Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and oral advocacy skills;
• Ability to manage both internal staff and external partners;
• Fluency in both written and spoken English required;
• Proficiency in a second language strongly desired.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

• Daily interactions with co-workers;
• Interactions with ICAR members, partners, and networks;
• Interactions with funders.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Desk research for periods of time;
• Occasional international and domestic travel (25%)

Compensation

This is a full-time position. The salary for this position will be between $79,000 - $92,000 and depend upon the applicant’s experience. Benefits for this position include Health, Vision, Dental Coverage; Short Term / Long Term Disability Coverage; 403 (b) Safe Harbor Matching; 15 Vacation Days (20 days after first year of employment); 10 Paid Holidays; Paid Closure December 24 – January 1.

Other Special Considerations

The Advocacy Counsel role is an exempt position. Exempt employees are expected to work the appropriate and necessary time in order to complete key assignments and related tasks on schedule. Must be legally able to work in the United States.
