Department of Political Science Overview
In the last three years, the Purdue Political Science Department has hired over a dozen faculty, bringing the total tenure track faculty size to 30, in addition to full-time teaching and visiting faculty. These investments have created departmental strengths in the study of political institutions and political economy, democracy and authoritarianism, and AI and technology, adding to existing strengths in conflict and modern warfare and environmental politics and policy, as well as politics, groups and identities. The department's undergraduate program is one of the largest in the College of Liberal Arts, with 558 majors, a 130 percent increase since 2020. Recent PhD graduates have secured tenure-track positions at R1 and liberal arts institutions, as well as in competitive postdoctoral and industry positions.
The Department is home or co-home to several university-recognized research centers, including the Center for C-SPAN Scholarship & Engagement (CCSE), the Governance and Responsible AI Lab (GRAIL), the Joe and Maggie Kernan (JMK) Experimental Lab, the Methodology Center at Purdue (MCAP), and the Program on American Institutional Renewal (PAIR), in addition to a wide variety of active department-level labs. Weekly presentations by faculty, graduate students, and visiting faculty create a stimulating environment for research discussions and collaborations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Department / School Heads in the College of Liberal Arts serve as visionary academic leaders and chief advocates for their departments. They are responsible for driving strategic direction while ensuring operational excellence within their units. Primary responsibilities include academic leadership; managing the department's budget; faculty and lecturer mentorship and career development; advancing undergraduate and graduate student success, which may include teaching at the graduate level; strategic resource management; and fostering external relations.
Heads collaborate closely with the Dean and the college's senior leadership team, partnering across departments to champion interdisciplinary initiatives and innovative problem-solving. Because Purdue is deeply invested in leadership development, Department Heads are supported by both the college and the provost's office through programs such as the New Heads Forum and ongoing professional development opportunities.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must have: a terminal degree related to the research areas of the Department of Political Science; a record of scholarly achievement suitable for appointment as a full professor at Purdue; demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring of students and faculty; evidence of effective academic leadership; experience with securing extramural funding; outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with dedication to building and maintaining strong relationships with alumni and other stakeholders; and evidence of successful leadership in promoting a culture of intellectual openness and respectful exchange of ideas across multiple perspectives of scholarship.
