Position description

Duties and Responsibilities

The assignment would cover the following themes

  • Provide technical expertise and advice to the SASG on specific legal matters, particularly as they relate to human rights law and the law of the European Union and its member states;
  • Provide advice to the OSASG team on how courts of the European Union and its member states have interpreted public international law, including human rights law, and the law of the European Union in certain areas of relevance to the work of the Office;
  • Provide analysis to OSASG on the likely future response of courts, including the Court of Justice of the EU based on its relevant case-law, to questions that may arise in the negotiations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide written and oral advice on legal matters, in particular as they relate to specific questions concerning the application of public international law, including human rights law, and the law of the European Union in areas relevant to the negotiations, including the case-law of the Court of Justice of the European Union;
  • Research key points of interest identified by the OSASG on such issues;
  • Provide opinions on such issues in response to questions from the SASG or the OSASG team.

Attendance at meetings

  • Be present at the OSASG and on-call during SASG's visits to the island;
  • Attend SASG meetings with facilitators;
  • Attend SASG meetings with OSASG staff;
  • Attend any other meetings when requested by the OSASG and by the Head of Office.

Other tasks

  • Where mutually agreed by the consultant and the OSASG’s Head of Office, assume other tasks as requested;
  • The consultancy is on an "as needed basis", the OSASG and the Consultant will together determine the precise number of working days for the consultancy beforehand.


  • Internal mission reports with recommendations;
  • Short summary of each mission outputs/outcome (one page);
  • Inputs, both written and verbal to internal brainstorming;
  • Provision of opinions/research papers in response to questions from the SASG and the OSASG team on legal matters as described above.

Required Skills and Experience


  • An advanced degree in law.


  • At least 15 years of work experience in a related field;
  • Demonstrable experience of working within politically sensitive environments, exhibiting a high level of diplomatic discretion when dealing with national authorities;
  • Knowledge of human rights law/law of the European Union is required;
  • Demonstrable analytical skills and strong drafting skills.

Language Requirements

  • Fluency in spoken and written English.
