Position description

The Embassy of Switzerland in the United States of America located in Washington, D.C., is seeking a qualified candidate for a 100% permanent position as Public Diplomacy Project Manager beginning on May 1, 2018. 

The project manager works in the Communications and Public Diplomacy Section. Under the leadership of the section head, the team is responsible for planning and implementing all aspects of the Embassy of Switzerland’s communications and public diplomacy outreach. The position primarily focuses on project and event management and requires excellent organizational and communication skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:

-      Manages public diplomacy projects and events in the areas of culture (Swiss cinematography, photography, performing arts), education and international law, from conceptualization to implementation and evaluation

-      Manages the Embassy of Switzerland’s active participation in language promotion activities such as the Settimana della Lingua italiana nel mondo and the month-long Francophonie Festival  

-      Liaises with communications colleagues to accompany public diplomacy projects with an integrated communications strategy that stretches beyond the physical audience in the room

-      Assists the deputy section head in managing the Soirée Suisse, the Embassy of Switzerland’s largest and longest-running annual public diplomacy event with up to 1,500 guests

-      Manages the Embassy of Switzerland’s annual participation in the Embassy Adoption Program, a partnership program of D.C. Public Schools, Washington Performing Arts, and the D.C. embassy community

-      Oversees the creation of the Events Calendar, the Embassy of Switzerland’s monthly event publications for both D.C. and Chicago

-      Manages the inventory and usage of the embassy’s internal library consisting of 700 books    

-      Supports the Swiss Honorary Consul in Chicago with annual public diplomacy projects


-       At least two years of project and event management experience in the Washington, D.C. area

-       College or university degree in international relations, political studies, arts or in a related field

-       Excellent written and verbal communication skills to conduct daily business in English

-       Aptitude for public diplomacy with an interest in working in a diplomatic setting

-       Ability to work independently, but also to integrate into a team to achieve common departmental goals

-       Ability to prioritize and multitask, sometimes under pressure and with short deadlines

-       Friendly and open-minded personality with a reliable and tactful character

-       Occasional work on weekends and evenings as needed (approx. 3-5 weekends and 20 evenings)

-       Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office suite, as well as database experience

-       Reside within a 20 mile radius of Washington, D.C., and have knowledge of the Washington, D.C. area’s cultural institutions and nonprofit landscape

-       Be either a U.S. citizen or a Legal Permanent Resident (LPR)

-       Capable of lifting up to 40 lb


-       Fluency in either German, French, or Italian, with a passive knowledge of one of the other languages

-       Basic knowledge of Switzerland and the desire to learn more about the country, its culture and inhabitants
