Position description

The International Rescue Committee Belgium is part of the IRC global network, which has its headquarters in New York and London. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is one of the world's leading humanitarian relief and development organisations. IRC Belgium was established in 2001 and represents the IRC's global network in Belgium. IRC Belgium leads on the IRC's engagement with the EU institutions. IRC Belgium seeks to drive policy change on the refugee crisis in Europe and globally, and to ensure that EU funding for the global refugee crisis is targeted effectively.The IRC works in collaboration with other Brussels-based NGOs to coordinate advocacy work and maximise impact. We are a member of Voluntary Organisations in Cooperation in Emergencies (VOICE), the European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE), the Human Rights and Democracy Network (HRDN).

The IRC is looking for an Advocacy and Policy Intern for the Brussels office.

Duration: 6 months, full-time internship, starting at short notice.

Intern duties:

Assist with research on how the EU and EU Member States address migration, asylum, forced displacement, integration and other humanitarian/development issues in their external and internal policies.

Monitor and analyse the latest developments in the European Institutions, Member States and the media for relevant humanitarian aspects.

Assist in formulating advocacy and position papers, drafting press releases, and liaising with NGOs, networks, etc.

Assist in the organisation of meetings and conferences with NGOs, EU Institutions and Member States.

Attend relevant meetings and conferences with donors, policy-makers and other partners, as requested.

Perform other duties as needed, such as keeping contact databases updated, organising travel, translating, proofreading, verifying references, summarising, helping with presentational as well as administrative tasks.

The role will also need to liaise with other departments and offices in IRC Europe including Communications, IRC UK and IRC Deutschland as required.


  • Graduate Degree in Political or Social Sciences, Law, International Relations, Humanitarian Studies or a relevant field.
  • Good understanding of the functioning of the EU institutions and specifically of the EU's external action and the Common European Asylum System (CEAS).
  • Knowledge about the issue of refugee protection, migration policies and humanitarian aid is highly desirable. 
  • Knowledge of refugee integration policy would be considered an asset.Familiar with current debates on humanitarian and development issues in the EU and its relations with partner countries.
  • Strong research, analysis and reporting skills, with excellent writing skills and the ability to undertake research quickly and write under pressure.
  • Exceptional organisation skills, with a very good eye for detail when organising events, and a demonstrated ability to multi-task, plan ahead and keep track of tasks.
  • Strong communication skills, including excellent (spoken and written) English required, combined with fluent French.
  • Proactive and able to work well independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, challenging non-profit setting.
