The Pulitzer Center is seeking a Grants and Impact Manager to oversee grants received from foundations and individual donors that make the public interest journalism and education work we support possible.  

Thirteen years ago the Pulitzer Center opened its doors, a one-person shop with a donated desk, modest seed funding, and high ambitions: to fill gaps in reporting and inspire a new generation of journalists to cover the big global issues that affect us all.

 We’ve come a long way – building a talented team, supporting hundreds of journalists, forging partnerships with strong news-media organizations and with educational institutions across the globe.

 We are now seeking a creative, detail oriented and high energy Grant and Impact Manager to oversee grants received from foundations and individual donors that make this public interest journalism and education possible. The position will primarily be focused on the management of grants but we envision the position expanding in time to more direct fundraising and grant proposal writing.

 A critical component of the position will be the collection of impact across our journalism and education programs–and the curation of that information into powerful stories that capture the important role we play. We are looking for someone with strong analytic and storytelling skills who is passionate about advancing our mission.

The position intersects closely with editorial, financial, communications, and management teams within the organization and will report directly to the Managing Director.

·   Grant reporting: Manage the calendar and life cycle of grants from current funders. Write interim and final reports on all active grants, working in collaboration with the relevant editorial or outreach teams responsible for the programs. On average, we have 12-15 active grants per year with varying degrees of grant reporting requirements. Most reports include narrative descriptions as well as quantitative results.

 ·   Progress/Financial tracking: Monitor progress against proposed deliverables as well as financial expenditures against the budgets for each grant on a regular basis.

 ·   Monthly updates: Develop system for monthly updates to be shared with relevant staff on:

-Available budget under restricted grants to determine available spending for editorial and outreach

-Remaining deliverables to be achieved within grant timeframe

-Grant system management: Maintain up-to-date system in Salesforce for progress reports and spending on active grants

-Impact tracking: Develop a clear system and procedures to effectively capture qualitative and quantitative impact on journalism projects and outreach in Salesforce

-Includes fine-tuning existing impact surveys sent to journalists and students and educators

-Working with Salesforce consultants to integrate results in a clear way under each grant

-Direct outreach to journalists, media partners and other partners to collect relevant impact

-Use of Coveragebook and other digital tools to track reach of distribution

 ·   Public communications: Working with communications and marketing team to incorporate impact into public-facing materials

-Develop social-media outreach based on impact

-Create quarterly impact reports and section on impact for annual reports


·   A Bachelor’s degree

·   A minimum of two to five years of experience in grant-reporting or grant management. Additional experience with journalism or education a plus.

·   Experience collecting and understanding what is meant by “impact” in journalism and education

·   The ability to envision practical systems and work with collaborators to implement them

·   Excellent written and oral communication skills

·   Strong analytical skills

·   Strong project management skills and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple priorities and deadlines without compromising quality

·   The ability to work independently, as well as the flexibility and creativity to work collaboratively as a part of a small and lean team

·   Experience with Salesforce a plus

·   A passion for global issues and a commitment to the Pulitzer Center’s mission
