Position description

The Committee on Global Thought (CGT) at Columbia University invites applications for a Program Coordinator. Reporting to the Director, and working with the Chair, faculty members, and the staff, the incumbent is responsible for planning and executing events and special programs, financial management and processing, facilitating communications and assisting with the day-to-day activities of the CGT.


Event Planning and Execution

Design and oversee the development of all aspects of event coordination, including outreach (building and maintaining mailing lists, e-mail and social media marketing), speaker coordination (organize speaker travel and accommodations, communicate with event participants), space reservations and logistics facilitation, publicity (composing event descriptions, designing posters/flyers, and building strategy for increased attendance.

Develop programs and events for Columbia University faculty's signature research projects, the undergraduate committee of the CGT, and the general public by researching themes, topics and speakers related to Committee interest, in particular Facilitate administration and documentation of ongoing Committee meetings

Financial Management

Oversee financial management, including: developing and planning of budgets and the generation of financial reports; preventing of overdrafts; supervising of flow of appropriate paperwork to the Office of the Controller, Payroll, and Purchasing. Assist the Assistant Director with budget planning


Design and create publicity materials for informational and promotional purposes maintaining a uniform style in line with CGT branding guidelines. Monitor and update CGT website regularly. Oversee ongoing rebuild of CGT website, communicate regularly with web designer. Field inquiries from general public and Columbia community regarding CGT programs and events. Corresponds and interfaces with University Administration.


Oversee and direct the work of student interns. Address administrative needs as required. 


Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 years' related experience preferred.
  • International experience is highly desirable.
  • Prior experience with financial and events management preferred.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, small team, deadline-driven environment is essential.
  • Must be self-motivated and a self-starter with a strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent computer skills essential.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills necessary, including ability to interact professionally, effectively and responsibly with a wide array of people with positive attitude and excellent problem solving capacity.
  • Must be available evenings and weekends during events.
