Position description

The Associated Press is the essential global news network, delivering fast, unbiased news from every corner of the world to all media platforms and formats. Founded in 1846, AP today is the largest and most trusted source of independent news and information. On any given day more than half the world's population sees news from AP.

The Associated Press seeks a News Associate (two-year assignment) to join its South regional desk in Atlanta, a dynamic operation that includes editors in text, photo, multimedia and video who work as a team to ensure AP owns coverage of the day’s news in all formats.

Reporting to the deputy news director for storytelling, the news associate will select, rewrite and publish news from AP members for use by other AP members.

The successful candidate will:

  • Thrive in a fast-paced and intensely competitive market, employing a solutions-based approach to all challenges to the AP’s success.
  • Work with AP’s field leaders, including state-based news editors, to ensure AP is improving its daily newsroom-to-newsroom contact with members and customers.

Candidates must have strong reporting, writing and editing skills, and a broad understanding of state, national and international news perspectives. Applicants should have a demonstrated aggressiveness in pursuing breaking news and success in collaborating and communicating with various levels of staff and customers. The successful candidate must be able to relocate to Atlanta and be prepared to work a variety of hours, including at night, overnight and on weekend days and nights.

Other qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.
  • Strong command of social media and networking tools in newsgathering is a plus.
  • Creative problem-solving skills and an ability to reorganize priorities in the face of rapidly changing needs and resources.
