Defense One produce award-winning journalism, newsletters, a podcast, videos, and live events on global threats, politics and policy, the defense industry, and science and technology. Defense One is looking for a junior-level journalist with experience in daily digital journalism to work in our fast-paced newsroom at the heart of the Washington, D.C., national security scene. The assistant editor will contribute to Defense One’s unique brand of coverage, working closely with reporters, senior editors, and executives across GEMG’s editorial, events, digital, web, design, and audience teams. 

 

The assistant editor’s duties will include writing breaking-news stories and working closely with the deputy editor on daily news production, including headline writing, photo selection and newsletter production. The assistant editor also will manage social media for the brand. A day in the life of the assistant editor would involve a mix of original reporting, writing news briefs, helping produce special reports and other editorial products, crafting news alerts, and helping develop editorial ideas for news and events. 

 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Reporting and writing news on deadline.

  • Daily news production, including posting to the site, editing photos, writing headlines and news alerts.

  • Managing and producing social media content.

  • Collaborating with other members of the Defense One editorial staff.

Qualifications

  • One to three years of journalism experience, preferably related to national security, politics, or foreign policy.

  • Excellent writing skills.

  • A nose for news and a heart for Washington.

  • Digital newsroom skills.

  • Flexibility and hustle.

  • A positive, good-natured, energetic attitude.
