Position description

The New York-based Video Journalist will have experience developing ideas around a range of national and international stories, especially the US political landscape both in the White House and out on the campaign trail. This role will be focused on producing news and features, as well as interactive, graphic and enterprise projects across a range of topics, including the 2020 candidates, hot-button issues, voter sentiment and political rhetoric in collaboration with our reporters covering politics. This guild position requires experience developing sources, strong script-writing skills, linear editing expertise and the ability to devise and execute creative visual solutions, all grounded in journalism at the highest levels. Developing unique political coverage requires someone who knows how to turn wonky topics and stiff politicians into distinctive video stories using motion graphics, original and found videography, dynamic editing, wire footage, stills, audio, text, field shoots and executions that we haven’t thought of yet.

The focus of this role will be producing coverage from New York, but the role will also include field producing. The ideal candidate will also have experience producing video on a wide range of subjects, and a track record of reporting nationally and internationally.

The Video Journalist will:

  • Pitch, develop and research stories based off of newsroom priorities and lines of coverage

  • Create a high volume of engaging videos that helps drive video views and expands our audience.

  • May work on a range of Times video content, including breaking news, enterprise and features production.

  • Develop stories and sources, and coordinate logistics for field shoots.

  • Must have a proven track record of solid editorial judgment that aligns with the ethics of The Times newsroom.

  • Some international and national travel required, with periodic weekend or night work, especially as campaign season picks up.

Qualifications

  • Ability to report independently and to advance coverage across politics, news and enterprise

  • A passion for politics

  • The ability to bring a highly creative approach to well-worn political topics. Must be comfortable working on tight, demanding deadlines and in high-stress breaking news situations.

  • Must be highly organized with the ability to manage schedules and handle the hiring and management of crews and freelance vendors when necessary.

  • 6+ years of experience as a journalist

  • Can shoot, write, edit, narrate, use social reporting, and can own research for projects.

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY
