Position description

Founded in 1981, the Committee to Protect Journalists is an independent, nonprofit organization
that promotes press freedom worldwide. We defend the right of journalists to report the news
safely and without fear of reprisal.


Background
The Committee to Protect Journalists seeks features editor to edit and help manage the flow of
news content, particularly features, analyses, and long-form reports but also news alerts, letters
of protest, and other articles. The features editor will work within a small team of editors, in
coordination with the advocacy and emergencies teams and CPJ’s regional programs, to advance
the organization’s mission.


This is a full-time, exempt position.
Primary Responsibilities:

  • Edit longer-form feature pieces including analyses, in-depth reports, mission journals, Q&As, and multimedia storytelling formats.
  • Edit daily news copy including statements, news alerts, and protest letters

  • Adhere to tight deadlines; juggle several pieces of various lengths and deadlines

  • Work with writers of varied experience and English-language skills

  • Identify trends in press freedom and suggest related pieces

  • Help manage the organization’s website, CPJ.org 

  • Help oversee aspects of web and print production and relationships with outside contractors

  • Occasional evening or weekend work

  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

  • At least five years of experience as a news editor for a newspaper, news magazine, news website, news agency, or news broadcaster

  • Experience editing in-depth, analytical, or investigative pieces of several thousand words in addition to spot news

  • Native-level English-language communications skills

  • Experience working with writers whose first language is not English

  • Ability to meet both short-term and long-term editorial and project deadlines

  • Familiarity with web content management systems, such as WordPress, as well as basic HTML coding and Photoshop

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to juggle multiple tasks 

  • Commitment to, and passion for, CPJ’s mission to promote freedom of the press worldwide

  • Ability to make independent decisions while taking into account the needs of several constituencies

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Strong work ethic

  • Ability to thrive in a stressful environment

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • U.S. work authorization

Preferred:

  •  Background in international news
  • Familiarity with global press freedom issues
  •  Multimedia, infographics and/or data journalism expertise
  • Experience copy-editing for style and grammar
  •  Ability to respond creatively to ideas, utilizing limited financial and human resources
  • Sense of humor

Salary: $70,000-$75,000
This job is part of a collective bargaining unit represented by the Writers Guild of America East
(WGAE).
