In SJN’s seven years, solutions journalism has become a credible reporting practice recognized for driving meaningful impact in society.  Over 14,000 journalists have been exposed to our curriculum. More than 400 news organizations have engaged SJN to produce staff workshops, develop reporting projects, and consult on audience or community engagement activities.

Role description:

SJN is hiring part-time contractors to augment our region-based staff, helping to introduce solutions journalism to a growing network of news organizations and individual journalists.

We’re looking for entrepreneurial journalists with high professional credibility and strong relationship and teaching skills. These contractors will build awareness and adoption of the solutions approach in the markets described below, with special focus on journalists and news organizations in media-underserved rural and urban communities.

We’re hiring one area manager each in...

  • Chicago - The ideal candidate will have experience working with ethnic media and communities of color.
  • Gulf communities (Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana)
  • New Mexico and Arizona - The ideal candidate will have experience working with Latino and/ or Indigenous communities.

Working with SJN’s region managers and coordinating with other staff, contractors will, as needed:

  • Identify journalists and news organizations serving communities that would benefit from solutions-oriented coverage.
  • Introduce and advance the solutions approach, using SJN's training resources to spur initial understanding and build capacity for adoption.
  • Develop strategies, leveraging SJN's national resources, to help targeted news organizations bring solutions journalism into regular practice.
  • Identify, train, and support journalist-trainers who can help spread the solutions approach.
  • Represent SJN at local and regional professional events.

Does this sound like your calling? We hope so: We’re an energetic, ambitious, and fun bunch, and we want great people to join us. We need folks who know how to solve problems, with an appetite for experimentation and an appreciation for ambiguity.

Diversity of perspective, identity, and experience is essential to us: We strive to reflect and serve the whole of society. We encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds to seek employment, and we make all employment decisions without regard to race, age, gender, sexual orientation, or any other factors protected by federal, state or local law.   • Strong entrepreneurial aptitude: You see opportunities at every turn - can can execute upon them;
  • Self-Starter: You're comfortable taking the initiative and are both able to complete tasks independently and good at collaborating;
  • Authentic Relationship Builder: You are adept at connecting with people and building relationships. You relish opportunities to engage with new people and bring them into your fold.
  • Familiarity with and connections to one of the targeted geographies above.

These are one-year, part-time roles, starting in April, with the possibility of renewal.

We welcome applications from candidates working full-time for news organizations, with their employer’s approval. We anticipate that contractors will commit an average of 10 hours per week over the year, depending on the flow of work and the needs of the journalists and newsrooms we serve. We will pay $18,000 to $22,000 ($34.60 to $42.30/hour) for the contract period, depending on experience and location, plus relevant travel expenses; this role does not include benefits.
