We have an opening for a Deputy Director in the Center for Global Security Research (CGSR) in the laboratory’s Director’s Office. The Deputy Director plays a leading role in the development of CGSR activities, in overseeing the effective and efficient implementation of CGSR programmatic activities, and in representing the Center to internal and external stakeholders.

Essential Duties

  • Provide technical leadership and support the CGSR Director in the development of CGSR activities and in representing the Center to internal and external stakeholders
  • Lead the implementation of CGSR program activities, including seminars, workshops, and publications, ensuring effective and efficient administration, including for example budget planning and oversight, document and video reviews with production, CGSR website content, space allocation, and the CGSR student program
  • Engage with external strategic partners in government, academe, and the think-tank communities, including planning and execution of meetings, visits, and other joint activities
  • Formulate, establish, manage strategic plans for strengthening key business relationships and enhancing communications
  • Contribute to CGSR substantive agenda with research, analysis, programmatic activities, and publications
  • Ensure CGSR meets the requirements of Integrated Safety Management, Integrated Safeguards and Security Management, compliance with all Environment Safety Health & Quality regulations, good business practices, diversity, and equal opportunity
  • Perform other duties as assigned



  • Bachelor’s Degree in a scientific, engineering or a discipline such as Political Science, International Relations, Government Relations, the Physical Sciences or the equivalent combination of education and related experience
  • Significant management or team leader experience working strategically at the programmatic and executive levels with proven strong interpersonal and administrative skills
  • Significant experience the Center’s mission, technology transfer with in-depth knowledge of LLNL, National Nuclear Security Administration or similar role at a national laboratory, university or in industry
  • Experience building positive working networks with U.S. and international individuals and collaborations
  • Significant experience with, and knowledge of, managerial and financial practices and the ability to effectively balance complex technical and budgetary priorities to achieve desired results
  • Expert verbal and written communication and collaboration skills necessary to explain, present, direct, negotiate, influence, and coordinate technical and programmatic activities over a wide range of topic areas with senior managers and staff internal and external to LLNL
  • Expert technical and organizational problem-solving, decision-making, and leadership skills and judgment necessary to advise, counsel, recommend, and develop solutions on a wide variety of management level technical and programmatic issues

Desired Qualifications

  • Masters in Political Science, International Relations, Government Relations, the Physical Sciences or related fields or an equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, the DOE National Laboratory system customer/sponsor requirements
