Position description

The Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) seeks to hire a highly motivated, well-organized Director of Communications who is familiar with and committed to furthering FDD's work.


Strategic communications is central to FDD's mission and the director of communications will play a key role in achieving our organizational objectives. This position will manage a team of five media professionals. The director's principal responsibilities will include:


  • Create and implement strategies for broadcast, print, and online media
  • Play a hands-on role in promoting FDD's people and products to the media
  • Develop and manage relationships with key journalists covering FDD's issues
  • Train and prepare researchers and experts for television, print and radio interviews
  • Oversee FDD's social media specialist
  • Oversee FDD's media lists and communications technologies
  • Oversee management of FDD's in-house broadcast studio for live and recorded television and Skype interviews
  • Write and edit press releases, op-eds, and other communications materials
  • Conduct media briefings and media conference calls featuring FDD experts
  • Manage and provide professional development for a staff of five professionals


  • Proven ability to develop and execute communications strategies.
  • At least 5 years of media relations and communications experience
  • Track record of developing relationships with reporters and producers
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to think creatively about how to pitch and position stories
  • Experience managing people and projects
  • In-depth knowledge of FDD's core foreign policy and national security issues
  • Bachelor of Arts or Master's degree
