Position description

The Shaikh Group (TSG) is seeking to hire a full-time Political Officer to join the team working on its Track II Dialogue for Mutual Security in the Middle East. Through this project, TSG has facilitated wide-ranging consultations and dialogue among former officials and senior experts from the “global powers” – the United States, Europe, China, Russia and India – as well as key Middle Eastern countries. The Dialogue for Mutual Security, through a flexible geometry of informal diplomatic and dialogue efforts – some discrete in nature and involving a small number of interlocutors, others more public – seeks to contribute ideas toward defusing tensions in the Middle East region short- to medium-term, and to develop building blocks for mutual regional security over the longer term.

We are looking for a Political Officer to play an integral role in the design and delivery of the project’s diplomatic and dialogue efforts. The Political Officer will report to the Project Director and will contribute directly to shaping the substantive direction of the project, facilitating dialogues, engaging with international and regional stakeholders involved, advocating ideas at the Track I level, supporting public outreach (where appropriate), and fundraising.

  • Provide in-depth research and analysis on key developments in the MENA region – specifically related to conflict dynamics in the Levant and Persian Gulf – to the Project Director on an ongoing basis.
  • Support the Project Director in engagement with the Track II participants from global and regional capitals.
  • Design dialogue agendas and support the convening of dialogues.
  • Draft summary reports, advocacy papers, talking points and briefings related to dialogue outcomes.
  • Support engagement with international policymakers to promote project outcomes.
  • Engage in outreach, advocacy and public diplomacy, as required.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with relevant international and regional partners and organisations.
  • Liaise with international partners and support project development, fundraising and reporting as required.

  • A university degree in relevant discipline (e.g. Middle East studies, political science, international relations).
  • Excellent communication, drafting and editing skills in English.
  • At least 3-5 years of relevant work experience.
  • Strong understanding of Middle East and international affairs, with a preferred focus on the Levant and/or Gulf.
  • Excellent political research and analysis skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and to execute multiple tasks in a responsible and organized manner, as a member of a team.
  • Ability to travel as required.

  • Ability to conduct research and converse in Arabic or Persian.
  • Previous experience working on mediation support or peacebuilding.
  • Previous experience in advocacy, outreach, public diplomacy.

Location: flexible (within Europe / Middle East).

Salary: commensurate with experience.

Start date: 1 October 2020
