Since its founding in 1919, the International Institute of St. Louis (IISTL) has served as St. Louis’ hub for immigrant services and community engagement and has built deep roots and excellent relationships with local and national immigrant groups. For the past decade, IISTL has assisted 6,000 foreign-born individuals from 80 countries annually. The organization provides a broad array of first-touch integrative services including English classes; job placement; social work; refugee resettlement and case management. Since 1979, IISTL has sponsored more than 24,000 refugees, serving as a catalyst for foreign-born growth in the St. Louis region.
IISTL seeks an inspiring and strategic leader who is passionate about the mission of IISTL and who brings the desire and ability both to raise the profile of IISTL and to make a lasting impact. This person will bring a combination of abilities that enable him or her to serve as spokesperson, charismatic and courageous leader, collaborator, relationship manager, program and financial innovator, fundraiser, coach and staff advocate, strategist and visionary. The next President & CEO must also be equipped to lead and drive change within the organization as well as in the public realm.
Although specific work experience in immigrant and refugee services is not required, key to leading IISTL will be a deep appreciation for diversity and an ability to express and highlight the benefits of this diversity to the broader public through advocacy on a local, regional and national level. The successful candidate must be calm and steady in the midst of political volatility and must possess the ability to successfully integrate into the community.
A track record of successfully engaging with an active and participative governing board must be evident to establish and maintain a climate of trust in all leadership and board related matters and to encourage active inquiry by the board in pursuit of organizational effectiveness.
Experience working with diverse sources of funding is important, as is the candidate’s ability to build and nurture a culture that appreciates and acknowledges the work of IISTL’s dedicated staff. The individual must be a strategic thinker and problem-solver without seeking or desiring to solve every challenge themselves; a healthy and intentional reliance on staff and volunteers (including board members) is required. An inclusive, collaborative style of communication along with the ability to be an authentic listener are important personal attributes, as is an ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with a broad and diverse spectrum of the community.
A bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university is required; a graduate degree or degrees is preferred. Candidates of diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
For best consideration, applications should be received by Monday, October 19, 2020.
