Position description

The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking highly-qualified applicants for the full-time position of City Director to take the lead on fundraising and outreach events in Canada, specifically the Greater Toronto Area (“GTA”) and Ottawa. The City Director is based in Toronto, with periodic travel as needed, and reports to a Managing Director of Development.

The successful candidate will work with HRW’s top supporters in Toronto and across Canada to build support for HRW’s work at a truly critical time. The City Director will be charged with nurturing, stewarding, and growing HRW’s donor base and presence in Canada, including by planning and executing two innovative digital events by June 2021.

We recognize that this moment, during the pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.


1. Oversee the strategic plan for development and outreach strategy for Canada with a specific outlook on Toronto, the GTA and Ottawa, while representing the work of HRW to existing and prospective supporters; 
2. Lead, motivate, and mentor the Toronto Development team, including communicating clear expectations, setting performance objectives, providing regular and timely constructive feedback, ensuring balanced workload, providing guidance on professional growth, and monitoring staff well-being as it pertains to stress and resilience issues and self-care; 
3. Promote inclusive and positive work environment including by soliciting diverse points of views, encouraging staff to participate in DE&I efforts, and proactively addressing bias, discrimination, microaggressions, etc.; 
4. Develop sustainable financial support for the organization by identifying and soliciting major gifts (CAN $25,000+) and general support funds from supporters across Canada; 
5. Work with Committee leadership and members to develop strategic fundraising and outreach initiatives to engage and cultivate major gift prospects; 
6. Build connections with and develop a portfolio of major donor prospects that are identified through internal prospect research, volunteer identification, cultivation events and other sources that have the ability and affinity to give to HRW; 
7. Research, identify, cultivate, steward and solicit prospective foundations and existing foundations that have the ability and affinity to give to HRW; 
8. Administer HRW’s legal entity in Canada including filing annual reports and corporate notices, working with Canadian external legal counsel, and overseeing the audit;
9. Project manage the following aspects of HRW’s legal entity in Canada: convening quarterly Board meetings, fulfilment of Contractor Agreements and Schedule “A”, complete financial transfers, and other items as they arise; 
10. Foster strategic individual fundraising initiatives, such as: planned giving, online monthly and recurring donations, to enhance the visibility of the program and increase membership; 
11. Liaise with Operations colleagues and HRW’s Board of Directors in administering the Canadian legal entity to ensure that annual reports and corporate notices are filed on time, that the audit is completed on schedule, that Contractor Agreements are fulfilled, and other items as they arise;
12. Oversee income tracking & projections, expenditure budgets, event expenses and revenue, and regularly monitor the department budget to ensure that resources are allocated appropriately; and
13. Perform other responsibilities as may be required.


Education: A bachelor’s degree in international relations, social sciences, or related studies is required. An advanced degree in philanthropy, business, finance, communications/marketing or law is desirable. CFRE designation considered an asset.

Experience: A minimum of seven years of fundraising experience is required. A minimum of five years of management experience is required

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. A proven track record in creating and stewarding major gifts programs and extensive experience managing high-level donor relationships are required.
2. Demonstrated experience managing a small team. 
3. Demonstrated experience overseeing production of large events, such as annual fundraising dinners and smaller bespoke events; including budget, revenue tracking and projections is required. 
4. Sound knowledge of the Canadian not-for-profit sector and trends within the social justice, human rights, or international development fields is preferred.
5. Strong technology skills, including experience with Salesforce or relational databases and online conference platforms (Zoom and Microsoft Teams) is an asset. 
6. Strong oral and written communications skills in English including excellent presentation skills are required. French or other language skill is an asset. 
7. Strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with external partners are required. 
8. Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW are essential. 
9. An entrepreneurial and disciplined self-starter who can work independently, but also function as a member of a development team, is highly desirable. 
10. Ability to travel locally, within Canada, and internationally is required.
