Position description

International Medical Corps is a global humanitarian nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through health care training and relief and development programs.

Established in 1984 by volunteer doctors and nurses, International Medical Corps is a private, voluntary, nonpolitical, nonsectarian organization. Its mission is to improve the quality of life through health interventions and related activities that build local capacity in areas worldwide. By offering training and health care to local populations and medical assistance to people at high risk, and with the flexibility to respond rapidly to emergency situations, International Medical Corps rehabilitates devastated health care systems and helps bring them back to self-reliance.



International Medical Corps has been responding to the crisis in Northern Mali since 2013. While the security situation remains volatile in the whole country, International Medical Corps is supporting the Malian government to improve and strengthen the health system through capacity building, infrastructure and workforce development, and technical assistance. Since 2015, International Medical Corps is seeking to transition from emergency to sustainable and longer-term development programming in Mali.


The Nutrition component of the IMC Mali program has been expanding since 2018, covering new intervention areas such as the health districts of San and Tominian in the Ségou region, in order to respond to the nutritional crises that the most vulnerable populations are facing. The actions implemented by IMC mainly include the promotion of IYCF and the treatment of acute malnutrition. Community engagement in the Nutrition sector is ensured through the involvement of community nutrition groups (GSANs), community health workers and the mother-Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) approach. The nutrition activities are implemented in an integrated approach with other sectors like health and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), also supported by IMC. In the health sector, IMC works in close collaboration with health authorities and community health associations (ASACO) to improve access to quality primary and secondary health care, through direct support of health facilities and through deploying mobile clinics. In the WASH sector, IMC's activities include hygiene promotion, sanitation, and support of the water supply in the supported health facilities.


Job Purpose

The primary function of the Nutrition and Health Coordinator includes coordination of the nutrition and health programs, active participation in coordination mechanisms such as the nutrition and health clusters at both national and regional level, liaising with donors, and supporting the nutrition and health managers in Segou and Timbuktu, reporting and reinforcing the technical capacity of the Ministry of Health staff through day-to-day supervision, mentoring and coaching as well as training. The Nutrition and Health Coordinator is expected to contribute in building sustainable interventions, in promoting integration of nutrition services into the health services package, and is responsible for maintaining regular contact with all partners and building capacity of both IMC staff and partners’ staff in nutrition.


This position reports to the Field Coordinator, maintains an open line of communication with the Finance & Administration Director especially for budgetary matters, with the Programs Coordinator for programmatic aspects and with the Medical Director for technical public health aspects. The Field Coordinator is the line manager of all field-based sector leads.


Main Responsibilities

Program Finance, Logistics and Administration

  • Prepare detailed work plans and budget plans for nutrition and health activities and ensure implementation of planned activities according to the work plan adhering to the budget according to IMC standards and oversee program spending per budgets and pipelines
  • Support and motivate program/technical staff in their work, by ensuring appropriate training, coaching and supervision by technical leads
  • Lead on staff recruitment and conduct performance monitoring in collaboration with HR to ensure that standards and protocols are adhered to
  • Coordinate closely with logistics in order to ensure that there is no break in nutrition program supplies.
  • Organize and follow-up on all other procurements needed for the projects 

Capacity Building and Coordination

  • Coordinate the nutrition and health program in Segou and Timbuktu; ensure day-to-day management and implementation is properly carried out by the nutrition and health managers
  • Assess the training needs of health and nutrition staff; develop a training program to meet those needs; conduct health and nutrition training for relevant project staff and MOH counterparts focusing on all aspects of community-based management of acute malnutrition (CMAM), IYCF and health (such as EPI, SRH, IMCI)
  • Represent International Medical Corps in Health and Nutrition coordination meetings at regional and district levels with the government bodies, international agencies, other NGOs and donors
  • Create and maintain smooth relations and open collaboration with Government and local stakeholders and serve as the health and nutrition resource person.

Program Implementation and Development

  • Provide strategic direction of nutrition and health projects with staff, identify needs and opportunities and provide mentoring and supportive supervision of project managers
  • Responsible for writing technical components of proposals and contributing to associated budgets, HR plans and workplans
  • Support the collection and timely reporting of data and statistics for nutrition and health programs in line with IMC guidelines and according to internal and donor requirements.
  • Identify potential nutrition /nutrition-related and health projects for development and lead on the concept note or proposal development while liaising with relevant partners and stakeholders
  • Determine assessment needs and assist project staff in planning and conducting nutritional and health assessments and surveys following the national approved survey protocols and integrate assessments results into proposals.
  • Ensure strong linkage of health and nutrition components with other components of the project such, GBV, WASH and disaster prevention and preparedness
  • Ensure proper functioning of reporting systems for regular assessment, monitoring and evaluation of the program against its objectives and expected results, and conduct critical monitoring of all aspects of CMAM and IYCF and Health programs to identify areas of concern. Submit workable solutions for identified challenges.
  • Follow up of project implementation to review progress towards objectives through organizing regular review meetings, updates and experience sharing meetings among staffs
  • Oversee IMC’s nutrition and health project managers across the field sites and provide technical support and direct supervision of field site support staff and collaboration with district medical teams on proper implementation of the service.

Implementation of the Feedback and Complaint Mechanism

  • Ensure all IMC staff are trained on the IMC Accountability Code;
  • Ensure all staff implement the accountability code through communicating to all beneficiaries the activities of IMC, in addition to the modes and conditions of acquisition by the beneficiaries, as well as ensuring accountability mechanisms are posted and available to community members in local languages and at no charge.
  • Inform beneficiaries about their rights and the existence of the circuit to formulate complaints in the case of non-satisfaction so that corrective measures are applied;
  • Assist staff in charge of satisfaction questionnaire administration to perform their work independently without interference;
  • Collaborate with the M&E Officer and accountability Focal Point in the field about vulgarizing the accountability framework and providing all necessary information to enable the proper implementation of the complaint management mechanism and its functioning;
  • Work with the M&E officer to ensure that feedback from communities is part of M&E exercises, and features in M&E and program reports; 


  • Represent IMC to donor bodies, the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs, UN agencies, other NGOs and local authorities
  • Work closely with the Local Government Units and ensure a smooth communication about IMC interventions
  • Contribute to the creation of a positive image and overall credibility of the organization, notably through the application of the organizations Code of Conduct, ethics, values and standpoint with regard to internal and external actors. 


  • Develop, implement and evaluate quality assurance measures and ensure appropriate follow up.
  • Prepare and provide regular monthly progress reports in coordination with the M&E Officer
  • Lead the production of reports and ensure the timeliness and accuracy of information provided, as well as ensuring confidentiality of sensitive information. 


Security and safety

  • Consistently and proactively contributing in monitoring and assessing the safety and security of field teams, promptly reporting concerns or incidents to IMC management and liaising with other external parties as required to maintain and enhance the security environment. 


Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse

  • Actively promote PSEA (Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) standards within International Medical Corps and amongst beneficiaries served by the organization.


  • Master’s degree or equivalent in Nutrition or Public Health; or a Medical Doctor with at least 5 years of experience in nutrition; or a Bachelor’s degree in Health or Nutrition or a related field of study with at least 5 years of experience in related field projects, preferably overseas


  • Proven experience in emergency nutrition settings, like CMAM, IYCF, social behavior change (SBC), nutrition assessments, major epidemic diseases surveillance and epidemic/outbreak investigation and response
  • Training on and experience in managing and coordinating CMAM, IYCF and PHC
  • Experience in facilitation of training review meetings and workshops
  • Experience in budget and administration, logistics, and Human Resources management
  • Experience in writing and developing project proposals including implementation reports
  • Knowledge of Mali and especially Northern Mali or the Sahel area, as well as speaking Bambara or Songhai language is preferred but not essential


  • Ability to read, write, analyse and interpret, technical and non-technical material and information in the English language
  • Ability to cope with stress and hardship
  • Demonstrate patience and flexibility, and willingness to work additional hours in order to meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to work effectively with government, community leaders, international/national organizations, donors, partners and other International Medical Corps relationships
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret data and familiarity with nutrition surveys (SMART, SQUEAC/SLEAC, IYCF, BA, and KAP surveys)
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond appropriately to questions from senior managers in the field and HQ, counterparts, senior government and leaders and other related regional key stakeholders
  • Advanced proficiency in the use of MS Office, and other computer applications


  • Fluency in both French and English is mandatory
