Sibling Support for Adolescent Girls in Emergencies (SSAGE):
The SSAGE Project launched in Borno State, Nigeria in 2019, and is implemented in partnership with Mercy Corps and Washington University. The purpose of the project is to encourage positive social norms that enhance a safe enabling environment for adolescent girls to grow and thrive while minimizing risks of GBV. The methodology works directly with male siblings of adolescent girls to promote positive masculinity, understand gender power dynamics and GBV, and mobilize for accountable change that supports adolescent girls and minimizes risks to GBV.
SSAGE is complimented by a mixed-methods research study that aims to understand implementation as well as outcomes related to family functioning, perceptions of self, and attitudes toward gender equity and violence. Together, the SSAGE program model and research have the potential to promote gender equitable norms and behaviors at the individual, household, and community levels, while also informing how programming in humanitarian settings can contribute to breaking intergenerational cycles of violence. Findings from the research in Borno State will also inform SSAGE programming and research design in Niger and Jordan, set to launch in the first quarter of 2021.
