Position description

The Associate Editor of Global Stories serves as a key team member in fostering a diverse, vibrant, and united Peace Corps community. They possess editorial acumen, digital fluency, and a commitment to the mission and vision of National Peace Corps Association. They are an active participant in informing strategic decisions and nurturing relationships to build NPCA’s visibility, outreach, impact, and resources, with a high priority on broadening the community. The position will support NPCA’s goals by sharing Peace Corps community stories, news, projects, and ways to engage both print and digital readers in the events, values, and mission of the Peace Corps community. The position is responsible for collaborating on a range of communications and publications activities, including the tracking of performance metrics. Work focuses on supporting NPCA’s website and online communities, and producing WorldView magazine.

This job description provides a general guideline to the most common duties, responsibilities, and minimum requirements for this position. It is not all-inclusive and the actual position may vary as circumstances indicate or as determined by the organization. Working hours are primarily during day shift working hours, but the Associate Editor of Global Stories may need to work varied extended hours as projects demand and during organization events which can include nights and weekends, as business needs dictate. Some limited travel may be required. This position reports to the Director of Strategic Communications.

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Nurture NPCA’s Online Community Presence — Ensuring it is timely, diverse, and vibrant

  • Collaborate in developing and executing content strategy for various digital platforms
  • Curate and solicit content from around the Peace Corps community, making sure a diversity of people, viewpoints, programs, and topics animate and inform:
    • NPCA social media
    • NPCA website
    • NPCA digital newsletters magazine digital
    • Global Reentry Program communications
    • Social Impact communications focused on climate change
  • Conceptualize, write and/or edit blog content, video stories, audio stories, and podcasts
  • Collaborate with rest of Communications team to build website traffic, and ensure an effective strategy to make the site a useful resource for our members
  • Create and manage thoughtful and engaging online activity and develop strategies to bolster our online presence and advocacy

 

Support outreach of the Global Reentry Program

  • Collaborate with Director of Strategic Communications and Director of Global Reentry Program to shape and execute communications strategies
  • Leverage platforms and messaging that will reach the younger and diverse audience served by the program
  • Develop and produce podcasts
  • Catch, curate, and amplify stories from around the community, including continuation of service stories and stories that highlight the Third Goal of Peace Corps

 

Support outreach of Peace Corps Community Connect

  •  Collaborate with Director of Strategic Communications and Community Outreach Manager to shape and execute communications strategies to grow and mobilize NPCA contacts during 2021 and beyond
  • Catch, curate, and amplify stories from around community for digital and print publication

 

Collaborate in managing and contributing to WorldView magazine for digital and print

  • Curate and solicit content from around the Peace Corps community, making sure a diversity of people, viewpoints, programs, and topics inform and shape in a reader-centered publication
  • Collaborate with the editor in developing features and department content, and take the lead on developing video and audio content
  • Collaborate with the editor in managing advertising and sponsored content, and be proactive in developing efforts to increase circulation and advertising opportunities
  • Collaborate in writing, copy editing, and proofing
  • Collaborate in photo and illustration research
  • Maintain collaborative style while communicating effectively with publisher, editor, NPCA staff, contract writers, issue sponsors, advertising consultant, art director, and printer

 

Other Job Functions

  • Collaborate in developing organizational messaging with NPCA staff
  • Work effectively alongside the Digital Content Manager on operational aspects of NPCA’s main website, job site, e-newsletters, and social media
  • Develop/write/edit miscellaneous reports, correspondence, briefing papers, press releases, flyers, etc. as needed
  • Stay up-to-date on best communications practices and trends
  • Assist with managing communications interns
  • Other activities as required

Qualifications

  • Five years of comprehensive, broad-based media and communications experience in an internationally focused publication, non-profit organization, alumni association, or similar environment
  • Returned Peace Corps Volunteer strongly preferred
  • Sensitivity toward cultural diversity and an ability to work across various regions of the world
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including an ability to represent NPCA in front of various audiences and across a variety of media platforms
  • Knowledge of/experience with successfully incorporating communication strategies into resource generation efforts and programmatic functions
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills and the ability to prioritize accordingly and thrive in a fast-paced environment; attention to detail a must
  • Team player with a sense of humor
  • Proven ability to learn quickly, manage multiple tasks simultaneously with little direction, and meet deadlines
  • Strong understanding of media and online technologies for advocacy/community engagement communications
  • Knowledge of international development, foreign affairs, and non-profit sector preferred
  • Proficiency with digital media strategies, website and blog maintenance
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, InCopy), HTML, basic video editing, Google apps, social media platforms; experience with WordPress or Drupal sites; willingness to quickly learn new media tools and platforms
