Position description

The Arms Control Association is seeking a creative, dynamic, experienced chief editor for its monthly journal, Arms Control Today. Applicants should have a proven track record in the field of journalism/publishing, either as a journalist or an editor. A strong commitment to high-quality writing and scholarship is essential.

We are also looking for these qualifications:

  • Excellent editing, writing, and reporting skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, develop, and support junior staff and consultants, and engage effectively with outside scholars;
  • Strong knowledge of print and digital publishing best practices;
  • Ability to execute multiple tasks under tight deadlines;
  • Ability to provide leadership for long-term planning and strategy for the publication; and
  • A solid understanding of the international security and arms control field and a commitment to ACA’s diversity goals.

Arms Control Today has been published since 1972 and is widely considered a top publication in the field of arms control, nonproliferation, and disarmament. Each 40- to 52-page edition is published in print and online.

Location: Candidates need not be based in Washington initially, but should be able to relocate no later than Jan. 2022.

Salary: commensurate with experience, from $75,000-85,000 base salary.

Benefits include: employer-provided health coverage; contribution to an individual retirement account (5% from employer beginning one year after the start of employment), paid vacation, and sick leave.
