Position description

The Public Sector Group is seeking a Vice President who will be working within its Global Sovereign Advisory team.  PSG serves the financial services needs of Citi’s government and public sector clients in the NAM, LATAM, EMEA, and APAC regions.

The Vice President position is intended to support the Global Sovereign Advisory team, based in New York, and the regional PSG groups based in LATAM, in the delivery of client advisory and solutions in close coordination with regional and product partners. The Sovereign Advisory team is structured to work closely with every product group at Citi, allowing the individual occupying this VP role to gain diverse financial experience and a broad perspective of how the firm functions as a whole. 

Core responsibilities:

The scope of work is primarily LATAM-related by may also be global, and ranges from assessing, monitoring and managing structural, macroeconomic, financial and high frequency data to understand, analyze and forecast economic policy and social trends in the LATAM region or a specific country with the aim to advise and customize Citi solutions for PSG clients.  The overall objective of the role is to act as a strategic advisor to our Public Sector clients in meeting their policy goals.

The work of the Vice President will consist, on the advisory side, of a wide variety of projects requiring macroeconomic analysis, country, credit and political risk, as well as sovereign debt analysis, supporting and guiding episodic transaction in their origination and execution, as well as supporting client relationship business through targeted sovereign advisory. This involves among others:

  • Designing, forecasting and executing global, regional and country-specific scenarios and stress tests, which complement the PSG’s and Citi’s product partners day-to-day client relationship activities
  • Understanding, compiling, stress-testing sovereign and external debt sustainability analysis, among others to guide Citi product partners in scope and timing of proposed solutions.
  • Stress testing sovereign, SOE and MDB rating methodologies to provide advisory for governments and government-related clients, whom we advise selectively on the rating implication of transactions and on managing their relationship with the rating agencies more generally.

On the business side, the Vice President will support the head of Global Sovereign Advisory in strategic revenue analysis and franchise reviews to identify new vectors of growth in LATAM as well as globally that ultimately affects the customization of products, services and capabilities we are able to offer our clients.

In addition, the work may cover the preparation of materials for Citi Seniors to present and speak at events and conferences on a range of public sector and financing topics, which will require a smooth coordination among regions and time zones.



Work Experience and Academic Qualifications

  • Master’s  degree with numerical background and thorough understanding of Economics, International Relations, or Public Policy Studies
  • At least [6-7] years of professional work experience preferably but not limited to Banking, Fixed Income Emerging Markets Debt either research, sell/buy side, Rating Agencies, prior experience working for a multilateral agency or international financial institution (e.g., the IMF, World Bank, Central Bank) would also be viewed favorably
  • Serie 79 and 63.

Skills and Competencies 

  • Strong interest and knowledge of global macroeconomic and policy challenges, geopolitics, economic development in Emerging Markets and understanding of the Public Sector Industry
  • Demonstrated ability to employ quantitative modeling and research skills to assist in economic and market analysis
  • Fluency in English and excellent command of Spanish
  • Excellent Microsoft office skills, Powerpoint, Excel, Word, Haver, Blooomberg
  • Strategic and project management capabilities coupled with strong analytic and financial acumen, this includes a high level of organizational skills, managing demands from several sources and working to deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work well in a small, collaborative team, while also communicating and interacting with a broader group of Citi professionals;
  • Valuing Diversity, demonstrating appreciation of diverse workforce and work style
  • Flexibility with work schedule (i.e. may work across different time zones)
