Position description

Government Executive Media Group is the leading publisher of news and information about federal, state and local government and the national security world. Our readers are some of the most influential public officials and military leaders in the United States. GEMG’s publications include Government Executive, Nextgov, Defense One, and Route Fifty.

Defense One seeks an experienced editor to join our expanding, fast-paced Washington, D.C., newsroom. The News Editor will review and edit copy from our reporters and contributing writers: breaking news, commentaries, features, newsletters, special reports, and more. Working under the Deputy Editor, the News Editor will contribute ideas for reporting assignments and timely op-eds, craft headlines, pick photos, and prep and post stories and other content. We are looking for someone with a nose for news and storytelling, who can edit everything from short alerts to long-form narratives, and who brings organizational skills and a flexible, eager attitude. Experience covering the military, defense, intelligence, foreign policy, politics, technology, or related areas is required.

Defense One produces award-winning journalism, commentary, newsletters, podcasts, videos, and live events about global threats, politics and policy, the defense industry, and science and technology. Founded by Atlantic Media, Defense One is a publication of Government Executive Media Group.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Review and edit daily articles by reporters and contributors on deadline.
  • Post articles to our website via content management system.
  • Select, crop, and post news photos.
  • Craft headlines, subheads, and other copy for editorial products.
  • Prepare digital newsletters, ebooks, and special reports.
  • Monitor partner publications and cross-post stories.
  • Help with events.

  • At least five years of relevant journalism experience related to defense and similar areas.
  • Professional journalistic experience as an editor and/or writer.
  • Strong editing, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Digital newsroom experience.
  • A positive, good-natured, energetic attitude.

At the center of Government Executive Media Group work are the ideas within our writing. We believe that ideas – to the good and not – have consequence. Our highest work is bringing rigor, insight, intellectual honesty, to that ultimate purpose of separating the bad from the good, giving voice, argument, and flight to the latter.

Spirit of Generosity

Government Executive Media Group seeks in its ranks a spirit of generosity – a natural disposition in each colleague toward service and selfless conduct. GEMG writing should be cut from the same cloth – critical on the merits but informed by charity and forbearance in measuring motive and personal character.
