We are seeking a talented, high-energy journalist to join our award-winning team based in Washington DC to report and give new insights on the impact of U.S. policies on people, society and the environment. The correspondent in this new role will cover policies that have a particular focus on some of the world’s most pressing issues, namely climate change, socio-economic (gender, gender orientation, racial) inclusion, and the impact of technology on society.
You will produce daily news as well as exclusive and unique long form stories, exploring and articulating the practical impact of U.S. policies on lives in the United States and globally and of cultural shifts. The ideal candidate must have excellent news judgment, be deadline driven, a self-starter with lots of ideas, and able to break news on a competitive beat. You will be versatile in balancing spot news with insightful enterprise that goes beyond daily deadlines. Teamwork and collaboration skills are essential and a pre-requisite.
Experience writing for online audiences preferred as the Thomson Reuters Foundation gets ready to launch an exciting new website that shows how world events impact people around the globe and engages a professional, purpose-driven audience. You will relish the opportunity to experiment with innovative story formats for both web and more traditional media clients to both provide more value to our existing community but also reach new audiences. You will be able to find creative and innovative ways of breaking down complex issues and themes into engaging coverage.
You will work with the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s award-winning global news team to produce unique stories that have impact, drive conversations, and raise awareness of the relation between major U.S. policy decisions and people, society and the environment. You will also build a network to include some of the sector’s most influential voices into our stories and thought-provoking commentary.
Run a file from Washington DC linking U.S. policies with the impact on people, society and the environment globally for web and wire products;
Generate ideas for and write a range of concise, sharp, and engaging news and feature stories and investigations of wide interest;
Write and research multi-media stories that highlight new angles on topics related to decisions made in Washington
Consistently meet deadlines and file concise, clean copy that shows how action in the Beltway will affect people
Develop a network of expert freelancers and op-ed contributors and sources to produce unique content;
Other duties as assigned
At least 5 years journalism experience, including a proven track record of investigating and articulating the impact of complex policies on people, society and the environment.
Broad and current knowledge of politics and policy issues, with special insight into federal, state and local policy
Versatile and engaging writing style able to adapt to digital and traditional media audiences
Demonstrated ability to report on underrepresented communities and capture diverse voices
Able to meet deadlines and work under well pressure;
Highly organised, self-starter and strong team player;
Experience building social media followings preferred;
Legal right to work in the United States
