Position description

Rowman & Littlefield is looking for an Acquisitions Editor, responsible for acquiring upper-level undergraduate and graduate level textbooks (including supplemental texts) and professional, reference, and scholarly titles in one or more of the following fields:

Geography, International Relations, Security Studies, International/World History, Area Studies (especially Asian, European, Russian, and Latin American studies), Religion, and sociology

The Acquisitions Editor is responsible for shepherding titles through review, development, and transmittal to production and contributing to the related sales and marketing efforts. 

Responsibilities

  • Developing and periodically updating the strategic growth plan for the list
  • Soliciting proposals and identifying backlist titles ready for revision
  • Creating editorial board documents including P&L statements and presenting projects to the editorial board
  • Creating and negotiating contracts
  • Managing author relationships
  • Attending professional meetings of interest to scholars and educators and campus visits (once travel resumes)
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with relevant associations and professional groups, to include the development and maintenance of new and existing co-publishing relationships
  • Sales analysis to identify strengths and weaknesses of the list
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in the social sciences or humanities (advanced degree a plus but not required)
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of proven scholarly/professional/higher education title acquisition experience and an active network in one or more of the fields listed above
  • Experience with co-publishing relationships a plus
  • Intellectual curiosity and strong interest and abilities in list building
  • Excellent communication and time management skills
  • Creativity and self-motivation
  • Knowledge of MS Office suite (Word, Excel), Outlook, and Windows
