Position description

The Senior Advisor for Strategic Outreach is responsible for advising the president and the Refugees International management team on public engagement/advocacy initiatives to improve protection and outcomes for displaced people—both in the United States and around the world.


The Senior Advisor serves as the Director of the Refugee Advocacy Lab, a multi-partner initiative co-founded with Refugees International, the International Rescue Committee, the International Refugee Assistance Project, and the Refugee Congress with the aim of growing the diverse constituency for U.S. leadership on refugee protection.


The activities of the Refugee Advocacy Lab will occupy the major portion of the successful candidate’s time.


The Senior Advisor for Strategic Outreach reports to the RI President and coordinates with the communications/campaigns and government relations teams at RI. In their capacity as Director of the Refugee Advocacy Lab, the Advisor works under the strategic guidance and direction of the founding partners of the Lab, and in close collaboration with all Lab partners.


As Director of the Refugee Advocacy Lab, the Director supports the Lab’s goal to grow the diverse constituency for U.S. leadership on refugee protection by developing communications products for the common good, supporting inclusive state and national policies, and building new partnerships.


Key responsibilities include:


Working with partners to design and implement the Lab’s strategy, as well as identify and execute shifts needed to achieve the Lab’s goal;


Leading the design and implementation of campaigns and initiatives to advance the Lab’s objectives, based on the animating principles of producing public goods, driving collective progress, and elevating refugee leaders;


Overseeing and coordinating Lab staff, who also serve in dual hat roles, and consultants in a positive-sum, collaborative spirit;


Fundraising for Lab activities;


Leveraging the assets and capacities of Lab partners for mutual benefit and toward shared objectives;


Building, expanding, and deepening relationships with stakeholders and partners, including through regular convenings and learning sessions;


Creating and sustaining processes and systems to oversee, track, and evaluate impact, performance, and operations; and


Ensuring that Lab activities and operations integrate smoothly with host systems at Refugees International, including identifying efficiencies and opportunities for streamlining.


In their capacity as Senior Advisor for Strategic Outreach at RI, the Adviser will also provide guidance and assistance to the RI president and staff on:   

  • increasing RI’s impact, for articulating theories of change, mapping stakeholders, building partnerships, and conducting effective outreach and advocacy;
  • design of campaigns and engagement tools, including social media, to educate, communicate with, and mobilize target audiences to achieve strategic objectives; 
  • engaging new partners and champions. 

This is a one year term appointment, with the possibility of renewal.

Salary: between $100,000 and $130,000 depending on background and experience.



The successful candidate will have the following:

  • At least 10 years of progressive responsibility and leadership in the fields of communications, campaigns, movement/coalition building, advocacy, and/or outreach;
  • Proven record as an inclusive, passionate, results-oriented leader and manager;
  • Experience in grant writing and fundraising;
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion;
  • Authorization to work in the United States; and
  • Experience with refugee and forced displacement issues, including lived experience, preferred but not required
