Position description

Trickle Up has a powerful story to tell: Since 1979, we have been a global leader in helping women and their families escape profound levels of poverty, vulnerability, and exclusion. With the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change reversing decades of global progress in ending extreme poverty, our mission has never been more urgent.

We are seeking a dynamic Director of Communications to lead us in telling our story with creativity, relevance, and impact. Reporting to the President, the Director of Communications leads the development and implementation of Trickle Up’s global communications strategy and annual plans; branding and content policies and procedures; public relations, and marketing initiatives; production of print materials, content for and other online platforms; and virtual and in-person events.  The Director supervises the Communications Officer based in New York City and works closely with HQ senior management and staff, as well as regional leaders and communications specialists to reach audiences including individual and institutional funders, program partners and peers, Trickle Up staff and board, and thought leaders in the international development field.

Principal functions

The Director will be responsible for:

  • Leading the development and implementation of Trickle Up’s global communications strategy, annual communications plan, and budget and work with program units and other departments to adapt the organization-wide communications strategy to specific program and local contexts.
  • Directing the management of Trickle Up’s brand by supporting content and branding policies and procedures, conducting staff training, providing materials and templates, and monitoring compliance.
  • Working closely with all departments, directing the creation of messaging and content that is accurate, compelling, consistent, timely, and aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Managing Trickle Up’s online presence, including content and traffic drivers for, social media, and other third-party blogs and other platforms. In addition, provide regular analysis of traffic and other online metrics.
  • Overseeing the design, editorial, and production of print materials and collateral.
  • Supporting the planning and execution of Trickle Up’s external events -- including participation in development sector fora and Trickle Up thought-leadership events; drafting speeches and presentations; and producing event collateral materials.
  • Ensuring compliance with funder branding and communications requirements.
  • Facilitating initiatives to build staff and board communications capacity, including publishing internal news to Trickle Up’s intranet (TULIP) and conducting board and staff messaging training.
  • Supervising HQ communications direct reports and guide program communications specialists, in close consultation with their direct supervisors, and make effective of interns and volunteers.


Education requirements

  • BA degree required, Master’s degree a plus.

Experience requirements

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in communications, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
  • Demonstrated record directing the development and execution of print, digital, and other communications products; donor and thought-leader events; and marketing campaigns.
  • Demonstrated record pitching stories to press, promoting an organization on social media, engaging influencers, and serving as an organizational representative.
  • Demonstrated experience managing staff, volunteers, and interns, as well as vendors and other third-party suppliers.

Knowledge and skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including presentations and public speaking, as well as graphic design principles.
  • Highly organized, able to manage multiple projects; meticulous attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of global poverty, nonprofit fields, as well as communications and fundraising best practices.
  • Team management and leadership; strong collaboration skills; ability to work with remote staff, both in Trickle Up regional offices and US.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator, preferred.
  • Full professional fluency in written and spoken English. Working proficiency in Spanish desirable.

  • Must be available for occasional international travel, occasionally to remote areas and/or in areas with safety and security issues.
