Position description

The Fuller Project is the global nonprofit newsroom dedicated to groundbreaking journalism about women to raise awareness, expose injustice, and spur accountability. Our vision is journalism that fully represents all women, giving readers The Full Story, and spurring gender equality. 


Our reporters in the US and around the globe rigorously report on untold stories and the interconnected issues affecting women and their communities everywhere. Our reporting often leads the news cycle and is published in prominent outlets, bringing the full story to a large and diverse audience.


Since 2015, our team has published hundreds of articles and reached millions of readers. In the past year, we reported on stories such as: an ongoing series on US childcare and childcare workers during the pandemic, a multi-part series on COVID-19 affecting women in India reported on and by 18 local reporters across the country, and an ongoing series on domestic workers and the labor economy across Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. 


Position description

The Fuller Project is seeking a Development Associate who is keenly interested in being part of a team engaged in the disruption of gender bias through independent journalism.


The Associate will develop and hone their fundraising skills by helping to engage and grow our donor base and expand our fundraising portfolio in support of our gender-oriented investigative and enterprise reporting. The Associate will report to the Chief Development Officer and support the Executive Team in all development functions as determined by supervision.


The Associate will also support The Fuller Project's expanding fundraising program including helping to build the individual giving program and grow institutional giving. In partnership with the Chief Development Officer, the Associate will nurture a culture of philanthropy that supports the organizational and newsroom priorities. The Associate will apply a diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging lens to all internal and external activities while expanding the organization's community of supporters. 


Note that this is not an editorial (journalism) position. 


The Associate will:


  • Support the CDO to deliver fundraising goals aligned with The Fuller Project's strategic plan and priorities
  • Research new funders, prepare briefs, lay out grant proposals and reports, write copy, and monitor deadlines
  • Update and maintain donor systems with contacts, acknowledgements, visits and other relevant information
  • Support the executive team’s involvement in fundraising
  • Assist the CDO with a stewardship strategy and related high impact events for top prospects, donors, and volunteers
  • Work closely with other departments, including the Communications team on visuals/communications, operations and finance on gift reconciliation, and the CEO, COO, and CDO on board development and engagement
  • Be a strategic thought partner and a doer 
  • Support an expanded strategy that could include: membership program, digital fundraising, corporate engagement, etc. 


The ideal candidate will have: 

  • 2-4 years fundraising and volunteer management experience
  • Superior writing and communication skills
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Mail Chimp or Constant Contact and with a fundraising CRM
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight and as a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside of the organization
  • Ability to take initiative and to collaborate and communicate effectively in a remote team;
  • Excellent time-management skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail 
  • Ability to creatively problem solve under pressure and anticipate needs
  • Experience managing a grant calendar and writing and managing grant application proposals
  • Experience assisting with Board meetings, minutes and packet prep
  • Experience conducting donor research and writing briefs
  • Experience working with a variety of programs: individual giving, major gifts, membership, digital fundraising, corporate engagement, etc.

This position is a full-time role that can work remotely within the US, with a preference for candidates who live in the Washington D.C. area or in the Southeast US. This role has access to benefits such as:
