Position description

The News Series Producer is responsible for supervising and line producing award-winning, statewide weekly television and digital news analysis programs and projects that cover critical state issues and politics with in-depth focus on impact of legislation and elections. Also responsible for coordinating with the work of the project websites. The News Series Producer will line produce other news and public affairs specials as assigned, including pre-recorded and live productions. This position assists with the management of the operations for the PBS Wisconsin news department and supervises broadcast and digital video content production and staff, provides editorial guidance, and may contribute content. This position reports to the News Director.

Bachelor’s degree in required, journalism or related field preferred.

1. Minimum 4 years of leading a broadcast video news project or programs. Experience line producing news programs.
2. Experience managing the work of a team of individuals with varying levels of experience.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in editorial decision making and ethical journalism.
4. Strong attention to detail with demonstrated excellent broadcast writing, grammar and proofreading skills. Knowledge of AP style.
5. Demonstrated ability to lead and work productively and successfully with people from diverse backgrounds.
6. Strong knowledge of Wisconsin current events, politics, and issues.
7. Proven ability to work in both independent and collaborative settings.

1. Experience in broadcast television field reporting.
2. Understanding of, and experience with implementing best practices and production of digital journalism.
3. Experience producing in public broadcasting.

• 20% – Series produces news programs and specials, including line producing weekly series
• 10% – Assists in the development of unit focused strategic planning initiatives and objectives and assists with the management of related activities
• 20% – Provides editorial guidance, including assigning stories, editing content, and coordinating coverage with other managers
• 5% – Applies editorial judgement and maintains the industry standards of journalistic ethics and excellence
• 5% – Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
• 5% – Performs the duties of the director and represents the interests of the unit in the absence of the director
• 30% – May contribute content, including interviewing sources, writing stories and completing other necessary production tasks to create news/public affairs reports
• 5% – May manage special projects
