Position description

Recipient of a World Changing Ideas Award and recently featured on NBC Nightly News, NBC Nightly News Kids Edition, and CNN, Empatico is an “edtech for good” nonprofit that offers a free browser-based platform for primary and lower secondary classrooms. Empatico’s mission is to connect classrooms around the world to foster empathy among the future generation and prepare them for an increasingly connected world. Students experience meaningful connections by discovering how other kids live and recognize both their similarities and their differences.

Empatico’s platform offers a matching algorithm, video, chat messaging, and file-sharing technology, along with activities that engage students in SEL-based learning. The platform is compatible with in-person, remote, and hybrid learning and offers teachers access to facilitator guides and professional development resources that equip them to better promote empathy and understanding among their students.

Empatico is in its fourth year of operation. We offer a fast-paced, innovative, start-up culture, with a high-energy, mission-driven work environment and the opportunity to partner with a high-performing, collaborative, passionate team. Empatico is expanding into new markets and experimenting with innovative products and services to ultimately transform the education space through our work.

Empatico is incubated by The KIND Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization on a mission to foster kinder and more empathetic communities by investing in programs that will have a scalable, lasting impact.

What You’ll Do

We are seeking an experienced Director of Product to lead the product strategy and execution for the Empatico platform. Reporting to the Executive Director, you will partner closely with the design, engineering, program, and other cross-functional teams to identify opportunities, understand user needs, define success metrics, and drive execution to deliver meaningful impact. This role will manage our global teacher matching and classroom exchange platform for educators to connect their classrooms for video meetings and to use for other learning activities with the goal of measurable positive outcomes in students.

The ideal candidate is an entrepreneurial, data-driven product leader who has a passion for education, designing delightful experiences, and creating technology “for good.” You will be responsible for managing a growing product team, working cross-functionally with the senior management team, and developing a strong product vision for Empatico’s future.

Empatico is a 100% remote non profit organization based in New York City. Occasional travel will be required.

To find success in this role, you will:

  • Develop and execute the longterm strategy and priorities for your team
  • Effectively manage pre-production, engineering and QA teams through multiple concurrent projects
  • Work closely with the Executive Director to translate product vision into actionable results
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to meet cross-functional requirements including customer needs, marketing features, programmatic guardrails and donor obligations
  • Clearly communicate timelines, product updates and roadblocks to ensure efficient coordination across the organization
  • Continuously assess educator needs, understand the evolution of edtech platforms, and identify potential product partnership opportunities
