DefenseScoop seeks a Managing Editor to lead day-to-day operations of the new publication, dedicated to the U.S. Department of Defense’s transformation into a digital-age force.

The ideal candidate has spent most of his/her career covering defense, national security and military matters, and is well versed in the operations of the DOD and how it has positioned technology as a central part of its National Defense Strategy. Technology is no longer just an enabler of mission for military services and defense agencies — it is the mission. 

The Managing Editor of DefenseScoop is a critical role for the development of the publication, led by someone who not only understands the inner workings of the DOD but also how to manage a team of reporters to optimally cover the department’s people, culture, technologies, concepts and trends. This role is based in Washington, D.C.

In joining DefenseScoop, you will have the exciting opportunity to help launch and shape the publication, the newest under the award-winning Scoop News Group brand, which has developed industry-leading news sites like FedScoop, CyberScoop and StateScoop over the past 13 years.

As DefenseScoop Managing Editor you'll:

  • Lead DefenseScoop’s daily coverage of top defense technology matters, from the Pentagon and installations here at home to foreign zones of conflict;
  • Report and write stories on the DOD’s growing use of technology;
  • Plan, assign, edit and publish stories with the DefenseScoop editorial team, from quick breaking hits to longform features;
  • Produce DefenseScoop’s newsletter, sent daily to 200,000+ subscribers;
  • Amplify editorial coverage on DefenseScoop’s social media platforms and with digital media best practices, including SEO;
  • Build community around the DefenseScoop brand by participating in events, moderating panels, developing an expertise in your subject matter and more; and
  • Work with the Scoop News Group team to create multimedia content for DefenseScoop.


  • 10+ years of relevant experience as a professional journalist, preferably in an managerial role;
  • A strong familiarity with technology and experience reporting on defense agencies, companies and other institutions in the defense community;
  • A bachelor's degree, preferably in journalism or similar fields;
  • Strong communications and organization skills;
  • A proactive, "can-do" attitude with strong problem-solving ability;
  • The willingness to work collaboratively with a team and independently as required;
  • Strong knowledge of SEO, AP Style and social media; and
  • Experience with multimedia tools, CMS systems and programming to create a polished final product.
