Position description

Democratic member of the Senate Armed Services Committee seeks a Senior Defense Policy Advisor. This position is the Senator’s point person on military issues and is responsible for initiating and advancing legislation through the annual National Defense Authorization Act, preparing research memos and vote recommendations, and liaising with the Department of Defense as well as the defense industrial base and defense communities in the home state. Additional responsibilities include working closely with the Senior Foreign Policy Advisor given the overlap on key national security issues, collaborating with press and state staff, and managing a Legislative Correspondent and a DOD fellow. Prior military service is mandatory, and the position will require a security clearance. The applicant must be a self-starter with the ability to handle a large volume of work in a fast-paced office, a clear and concise writing and briefing style, deep institutional relationships, an independent thinker, the ability to spot and pursue legislative opportunities, and outstanding time management skills. The office values an atmosphere of teamwork and collegiality; the occupant of this position must be a good colleague and an even-keeled presence in the office. Capitol Hill experience is a plus but not critical.
