Applications and nominations are invited for the Governor John C. West Chair of Government and International Studies in the Department of Political Science at The Citadel: the Military College of South Carolina. The chair holder is expected to offer an exceptionally distinguished and highly visible record of service in academia and/or senior levels in American government.
The successful candidate would assist in supporting an innovative and challenging curriculum in policy studies. Other duties include a combination of the following: teaching no fewer than two courses during an academic year; conducting such activities as delivering an address in the College's Greater Issues Series or a public lecture; conducting student and faculty seminars; arranging for distinguished figures in American government, diplomacy and other endeavors to visit the College for the purposes of presenting lectures or participating in seminars; and providing a public presence for the college in the community and the nation
The ideal candidate will have a substantial background in Public Policy either in an academic setting (i.e. establishing or administering a successful public policy degree program) and/or experience in a high-level role in a federal and/or state-level agency.
Preference will be given to recently retired or retiring senior officers of the military or foreign service.
Initial appointment will be made for the period August 2023-May 2024; mutually renewable for a second and third year. Salary is negotiable. Additional funds are available for support of chair-related activities, including travel and support for symposia, seminars, and visiting lecturers.
