Position description

The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a unique global network of policy research centers, is seeking to hire a DC-based Research Analyst to support its Indian Ocean Initiative.

The Indian Ocean Initiative is an effort to study and research the Indian Ocean as one geographic theatre, including both traditional and non-traditional maritime issues. The initiative aims to rectify gaps on Indian Ocean literature, its place within the Indo-Pacific framework and create a hub for research and convening on various themes on the Indian Ocean, its islands and territories. The initiative currently has two major projects: an annual islands dialogue, a unique platform bringing together the islands of the Indian and Pacific Oceans to understand and highlight concerns and views of island nations of the Indo-Pacific. The initiative is also building an interactive map which aims to visualize issues across the ocean and create a coherent database on political, military, strategic, economic and geopolitical frameworks across the Indian ocean.

The Research Analyst will be responsible for research to support the both the islands dialogue and the interactive map. Duties will include research related to projects within the initiative, contributing to published analysis, convening in-person workshops and meetings, supporting proposals and project budgets, and administrative responsibilities for the initiative. The Research Analyst will play a key role in convening the annual islands dialogue in New York including support toward drafting agenda, speaker engagements, research, analysis and dialogue coordination.

The successful candidate will have either an undergraduate degree and 2-3 years of research experience or a graduate degree and 1-2 years of research experience. Knowledge on maritime security and the Indian Ocean is an advantage. The ideal candidate should possess the enthusiasm and curiosity to better understand and study issues of maritime security and the Indian Ocean. The organizational aspects of the role will be pivotal in enabling the projects to deliver impact, and we are looking for someone who displays attention to detail, as well as willingness to take ownership of essential research and coordination tasks.
