Position description

The Department of Political Science at the College of Charleston is seeking candidates for two visiting assistant professor positions in American politics beginning August 2023. We are looking for candidates who can teach multiple sections of introduction to American politics. Opportunities to teach courses in candidate's area of expertise are possible. The successful candidate will teach a 4-4 load. A PhD in Political Science, or a closely related field, is required.

Although this is an open search in the American politics subfield, we are particularly interested in candidates whose research and teaching focus broadly in the areas of political theory, race & politics, public policy, and the law. We seek candidates who have experience advising students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for students who represent historically oppressed and marginalized identities.

The Political Science Department has 21 full-time faculty, over 360 undergraduate majors (, and a Geography Minor ( The department also supports the NASPAA Accredited Master of Public Administration with an enrollment of approximately 60 students ( and Master of Science in Environmental and Sustainability Studies ( program and contributes to a concurrent MES/MPA degree. The Department is committed to the rigorous study of politics, power, and place, expanding opportunities for learning and service, career preparation, and civic participation locally and globally.

The College of Charleston is located in historic downtown Charleston in a coastal metropolitan area of 800,000.
