Guardian Media Group (GMG) is a leading global media organisation, the publisher of the Guardian, which celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2021, the Observer and theGuardian.com, which attracts over 200 million global unique browsers each month. We are renowned for our ground-breaking independent journalism and our award-winning digital products.

We are now looking for a Data Journalist for a seven-month contract to cover maternity leave, starting October 2024

As a journalist on the Data Projects Team you will collaborate on exciting data projects across the newsroom, generate and provide impactful data journalism online and in print for our national, environment, business, foreign, global development and European coverage.

About the Role

  • Write data-driven stories and analysis with a view to producing medium- and long-term original reporting and investigations
  • Perform fast data analysis for quick turnaround news stories when required
  • Work closely with our departmental colleagues on the graphics and visuals desks 

About You

  • Two years minimum experience on a national/regional news organisation, website or magazine
  • A track record of using data, numbers and statistics to create impactful journalism
  • Proven ability in Google Sheets or Excel, R or Python or another applicable programming language
  • Ideally, you'll have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role
