Position Description

The NGO Coordination Advisor provides leadership to country-based NGO forums and their steering committees in terms of forum governance and collective advocacy and provides relevant training on an ad hoc basis. To this end, the NGO Coordination Advisor regularly engages with both existing INGO forums and colleagues in countries that are trying to start-up forums to provide a broad range of support and foster connections and collective learnings.

InterAction conducts this work in close collaboration with ICVA and the NGO Coordination Advisor will thus be requested to ensure collaboration with them, especially as they relate to inclusion of/consultation with the National NGO fora which ICVA supports. The incumbent is also expected to work across teams within the Humanitarian Team to ensure synergies between Humanitarian Practice, Policy, Protection, and Shelter and Settlements teams work and relevant areas of collective interest, advocacy, and learning.

This is a full-time position based in Washington D.C. InterAction maintains a hybrid work environment and employees are eligible to telework three days a week and work in the office two days a week. There is an expectation that employees will be based in the Washington D.C. region.

Essential Functions

  • Lead InterAction’s NGO forum coordination and support function, including designing strategies for enhanced engagement and innovative support resources.
  • Identify knowledge gaps or areas of collective concern either in terms of issues or geography, and lead development of products and policies designed to bridge these
  • Lead monthly all forum calls on matter of collective interest
  • Convene at least one yearly for a forum meeting
  • Contribute to updating and coordinating the NGO coordination website together with ICVA
  • Continue to curate and socialize the platform housing for guidance, templates and tools
  • Provide regular help desk support through the NGO forum community of practice
  • Provide ad hoc support to NGO forums as they are undergoing governance changes
  • Provide ad hoc support to NGO forums to creating, updating, or evaluating their structure and their advocacy strategies
  • Provide support to NGO advocacy tours passing through the U.S. in close collaboration with the USG-facing members of the practice team
  • Identify gaps in terms of tools and resources that could support forums and contribute to closing them
  • Support the proposal development and reporting on existing grants related to this project as well as actively seek additional funding for this component of the team’s work in coordination with the humanitarian team’s leadership
  • Other tasks as requested and relevant

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in international relations, political science, management or other relevant field, or equivalent work experience
  • 10 years of work experience within international humanitarian assistance, with a minimum of 3 years of field-based experience
  • Previous experience in coordination activities involving key stakeholders in humanitarian response (INGOs, local NGOs, UN, donors, etc.)
  • Strong knowledge of the UN system, particularly around the IASC and its affiliated bodies
  • Familiarity with current issues in the humanitarian sector. Including complex emergency response, natural disaster response, security, civil military relations, disaster risk reduction, and staff care
  • Meeting facilitation skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal kills and experience managing the needs and interests of diverse constituencies
  • Availability for domestic and international travel

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preferably 10 years of work experience within international humanitarian assistance, with a minimum of 3 years of field-based experience in a coordination or country-program leadership role
  • Previous experience at the field level in coordination activities involving key stakeholders in humanitarian response (INGOs, local NGOs, UN, donors, etc.)

Supervisory Responsibilities

The position supervises one employee.

Compensation

Salary range $90,000 - $120,000 per year, commensurate with skills and experience.
