The New Arab is a fast-growing English-language website focused on authentic coverage of news, current affairs, and culture and lifestyle stories from the Middle East and North Africa region and beyond. Targeting audiences interested in the region in English language speaking countries and communities, led by the UK, North America, South and East Asia, and Australia/New Zealand.

The New Arab’s diverse newsroom offers a platform for the voice of the Middle East and aims to provoke an exchange of ideas and open discussion in a responsible manner via news, in-depth analysis and comment. We have a large pool of journalists from all backgrounds, allowing us to provide fruitful and insightful reporting on cultural and social issues, as well as political and humanitarian issues.

The New Arab is the English sister publication of Arabic daily newspaper and online news outlet Al-Araby Al-Jadeed and is part of the Fadaat Media network, which allows us to leverage sprawling networks of correspondents in the region and their high-quality output, as well as its own resources.

The Arabic news website is accessed by millions of readers worldwide, making it one of the world’s most widely read independent Arab news services.

Job Summary 

The Investigative Journalist will be developing investigations and assisting the Investigative Editor.

The Investigative Journalist will work on long-form projects and short-form projects that will require a quicker turnaround, depending on the story.

In coordination with the Investigative Editor, they will keep track of ongoing freelance and in-house projects. They will also consolidate the body of knowledge and processes that underpins the workflow of the investigative desk from research up until publication.

The Investigative Journalist will be constantly on the lookout for collaborations and partnerships with investigative journalists and organisations.

Responsibilities and Duties: 

● Identify potential investigative leads on specific issues, individuals, and corporate entities using both online open-source research and confidential sources.

● Conduct research on specific issues, individuals, and corporate entities via both online open sources and confidential human intelligence to identify potential investigative leads.

● Contribute to ongoing investigations by researching, summarising findings, and briefing the Investigative Editor or other contributors.

● Pursue Right of Reply (ROR) with concerned parties and conduct interviews

● Liaise with sources and contributors on a strictly confidential basis using encrypted communication software.

● Develop and organise internal searchable database of leaked material for the peruse of the investigative unit.

● Keep track of workflow and partnerships on different projects and update related shared documents.

● Look for collaborations and partnerships with investigative journalists and organisations.

● Attend editorial meetings when required.

● Promote investigations on social media through our channels.

● Template articles on website

● Produce one medium-length investigation per month.

● Research/propose three leads per week, to be discussed with Investigative Editor.

Requirements:

  • Fluency in English and Arabic (written and at least one spoken dialect)
  • OSINT skills
  • Very meticulous attention to details
  • Thorough research skills
  • Knowledge of digital security best practices
  • Must have a full right to work in the UK.

Desirable: 

  • Able to process/scrape large quantities of data using Python or similar software and list/display them in excel sheets, maps and charts.
  • Additional languages (e.g. Hebrew, Turkish, French, Persian, Russian, Mandarin, Hindi, Spanish)
  • Trained in UK media law
