Position description

The University of Maine Presque Isle is seeking a broadly-trained historian or political scientist for a 9-month tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of History and Political Science beginning September 1, 2025. The successful candidate will bring a demonstrated record of teaching and research/professional development in the broad areas of history or political science. The candidate should have the ability to grow an exciting and innovative undergraduate academic program and to help build capacity within this program.

The University of Maine Presque Isle recently established a B.A. in History and Political Science in the YourPace competency-based modality offered along with the program in traditional in-person and traditional online modalities, which include a range of courses in history and political science. 

Teaching load will be a mix of traditional in-person, traditional online, and YourPace modalities. Primary teaching responsibilities will include in-person sections of American Government and U.S. and World Civilizations surveys, and upper-level courses in history and/or political science in the traditional in-person, traditional online, and YourPace modalities in accordance with need. Advising history and political science students and serving on 1-2 campus committees is expected, including Early College/Dual Enrollment.

Responsibilities include (and are not limited to): 

    • 24 contact hours of teaching per year which may include traditional fall and spring offerings in addition to summer courses;
    • Participation in Early College/Dual Enrollment
    • Advising; service to the department, university and community;
    • Research/publications, conference presentations, or other professional development activities in area(s) of expertise.

The position is located at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, but distance delivery modalities may be assigned as determined necessary by the College chair. The schedule will be variable based upon teaching schedule and research demands. Work beyond regular hours (which may include nights and weekends) may be necessary in order to meet the requirements of the position.

Based on the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant, the minimum salary for Assistant Professor is $62,222, commensurate with education and experience. Required Qualifications: 

    • ABD in history or political science (Ph.D to be completed two years following hire).
    • Demonstrated successful experience in teaching history or political science courses at the collegiate level.
    • Effective oral and written communication skills and ability to collaborate with the campus, local, and regional communities.
    • Demonstrated experience or ability to employ high impact teaching practices, multiple forms of formative and summative assessment, and technology that qualitatively improves the learning experience, including on-line teaching methods.
    • Demonstrated ability to engage in research/publication, conference presentations, or other professional development activities in area(s) of expertise.

Preferred:

    • Ph.D. in history or political science.
    • 3+ years teaching history or political science courses at the collegiate level in various delivery modalities.
    • Demonstrated record of campus or community service.
    • Demonstrated experience with Early College/Dual Enrollment programs.
