As the destination marketing organization for the United States, Brand USA’s mission is to increase international visitation to the USA in order to fuel the U.S. economy and enhance the image of the United States worldwide. Established by the Travel Promotion Act of 2009 as the nation's first public-private partnership to spearhead a globally coordinated marketing effort to promote the United States as a premier travel destination and to communicate U.S. entry policies, Brand USA began operations in May 2011.

As one of the best levers for driving economic growth, international travel to the United States  currently supports 1.8 million American jobs (directly and indirectly) and benefits virtually every sector of the U.S. economy. Brand USA works in close partnership with more than 600 partner organizations to invite the world to explore the exceptional, diverse, and virtually limitless travel experiences available in the United States of America.  According to studies by Oxford Economics, over the past three years Brand USA's marketing initiatives have helped welcome more than three million incremental visitors to the USA, benefiting the U.S. economy with nearly $21 billion in total economic impact, which has supported, on average, 50,000 incremental jobs a year.

Brand USA’s operations are supported by a combination of non-federal contributions from destinations, travel brands, and private-sector organizations plus matching funds collected by the U.S. government from international visitors who visit the United States under the Visa Waiver Program.

Strategic Internship Objective

The Intern will gain knowledge of International Travel Trade, its function and how this contributes  to the visitation goal of 100 million visitors by 2021. Being an intergral part of the Global Trade Development team will assist in; educating the International Travel Trade on the value proposition of Brand USA, providing the necessary tools to effectively promote the USA as a vacation destination; assist with the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for selecting the International Brand USA offices.

Learning Goals for Internship: 

  • Comprehensive understanding of the Global Trade Development Team and our role within Brand USA.  These include, but are not limited to: creating a strategic plan, managing the international representation teams, creating new product offerings, creating co-op marketing programs, managing the USA Discovery Program, participating in the management of trade shows and sales missions, maintaining relationships with the Visit USA Committees and the U.S. Commercial Service around the world.
  • Understanding the travel distribution channel. 

Intern Responsibilities & Tactics:

  • Saleforce management – Assisting with data entry of new contacts into the CRM system.
  • Assisting in the day to day management of the country offices.
  • Assisting in further development of the travel professional’s tool kit and the travel professional’s website.
  • Final Project: Create calendar of key activities in market that require additional communications support, collaborate with communications team to identify collateral needs for distribution. This plan will include steps for: trade show thank you letters, sales missions invitations and updates, etc

  • Strong written and verbal communications skills, as well as familiarity with internet technologies and Microsoft Office

Field of study:

  • Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program focused in marketing, communication, international relations or related discipline.
