Position description

We are seeking an experienced and talented bureau chief to lead our news file from Brazil in one of the most tumultuous moments in the country’s history. Based in Sao Paulo, the bureau chief will lead a team of journalists writing in English and Portuguese to cover Latin America’s largest economy, one of the world’s major commodities producers and a major emerging market.

Brazil’s economy is struggling to emerge from its most painful recession on record amid a widening corruption scandal that threatens to topple President Michel Temer and derail his agenda of economic reforms. With every major party tainted by corruption, foreign investors attracted by the prospect of an economic recovery are warily eying next year’s wide-open presidential poll and wondering whether the business-friendly agenda will survive.

The Brazil file crosses all asset classes and comprises a wonderful range of stories. It is the world’s ninth largest economy and a major global supplier of agricultural goods, minerals and oil. It is also home to a wealth of fascinating company news sagas - from heavily endebted state oil firm Petrobras to scandal plagued meatpacker JBS, and international players like Google and Heineken who are looking to make inroads in a market of more than 200 million people.

The successful candidate will be experienced in balancing multiple stories and producing fast, smart coverage of spot news and ambitious enterprise journalism. She or he will be a strong editor and a skilled manager who leads by example and can get the best out of a talented team spread out across three bureaus.  Good Portuguese desirable but not essential, especially if the candidate has Spanish.
