Position description

World Policy Journal is positioning to be a subversive, insurgent international voice in a stuffy and staid policy establishment. (A recent issue looked at Black Lives Matter in a global context, for instance, and we did the first all-female masthead of a policy mag.) We're not only looking for a great, globally-minded editor, but really a maestro - someone who wants the top line on the masthead, and is vibrant, dynamic, creative, ambitious, and excited about carrying the revival of the 35-year old quarterly.

Editor, World Policy Journal World Policy Journal is seeking a new editor to guide the editorial operations of the 34-year old international affairs publication. World Policy publishes a print quarterly, online commentary, and a podcast --currently with a full-time staff of two. The major responsibilities of this full time position include the following:

  • Attract high-quality writers with fresh perspectives on key issues, with a particular emphasis on developing a diverse set of non-US based writers
  • Identify cover themes for each issue of the magazine
  • Set the tone, editorial direction, and policies for publication
  • Ensure that World Policy Journal reflects the general mission of the World Policy Institute
  • Main authority as final word on published articles and images, as well as on design and layout
  • Manage and oversee editorial staff and interns
  • Re-engage, rebuild, and develop the WPJ Editorial Board
  • Generate new ideas for improving overall media experience
  • Increase the circulation, visibility, and relevance of World Policy Journal
  • Act as publisher point person: discussing issues, plans, and other business items relating to the publication
  • Serve as public face and advocate for WPJ, making public appearances and promoting the brand
  • Serve as a member of the Institute's executive team, contributing to broader discussions on strategy and operational effectiveness, presenting at bimonthly board meetings, and serving as a liaison between the editorial team and the board of directors.

The successful candidate will lead all aspects of magazine production. The editor needs vision to set a unique editorial agenda; strong line- and copy-editing skills; the ability to manage and mentor a small team; and a keen understanding of the contemporary media landscape, domestic and international.
