Position description

The Media Department of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking a highly qualified candidate for the position of Campaign Associate to help develop HRW’s nascent campaign unit. The Campaign Associate will support and contribute to the team working to mobilize HRW’s public audience, philanthropists, and key influencers to advance advocacy priorities. The Associate will join the team developing and implementing both digital campaigns and broader institutional participation in human rights campaigning. This position is based in New York and is full-time for six months. The Associate will report the Campaign Director, based in New York, and work closely with the Digital Director, Digital Advocate and the Marketing team.

HRW is looking for a strategic and creative digital thinker with who is comfortable navigating digital platforms. This is an opportunity to help innovate additional resources for real world change on the most pressing human rights issues of the day.

  1. Provide administrative support to the Campaign Director and the Campaigns Team as well as to the Deputy Executive Director of Media and other senior staff in the department including scheduling, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, making travel arrangements, tracking and processing divisional expenses, and maintaining pipelines;
  2. Conduct web-based research to help identify opportunities for the Campaigns Team including influencers, strategic partnerships, and issue stakeholders;
  3. Monitor active campaigns and compile data reporting;
  4. Maintain archive and active learning documentation for campaigns;
  5. Conduct user testing for campaigns and engage online with campaign participants;
  6. Maintain campaign timelines and project management tools;
  7. Assist with the recruitment and coordination of interns; and
  8. Carry out other duties as required.


Education: A bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, international relations, media innovation, marketing, social sciences, or a related field is required.

Experience: A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

  1. Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills are required.
  2. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and the ability to synthesize content for popular audiences are essential.
  3. Strong initiative and follow-through and the capacity to think creatively and strategically are required.
  4. Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with external partners are required.
  5. Excellent organizational and time-management skills with meticulous attention to detail is required.
  6. Experience working on major social media platforms is essential.
  7. Ability to work quickly and effectively under pressure with a broad range of people and as part of a team is required.
  8. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.
  9. Strong commitment to and experience working on human rights are preferred; experience working with non-governmental organizations is desirable.

Other: Applicants for this position must possess current US work authorization valid for a minimum of two years from start date.

Duration: This is a full-time, fixed-term six-month position with the possibility of renewal based on funding.

Salary and Benefits: Annualized salary range starts at $45,150. Human Rights Watch offers comprehensive employer-paid benefits, including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, an outstanding retirement savings plan and twenty (20) days of vacation per year, prorated to the length of the contract.
