Position description

The Foreign Policy Associate is responsible for research, writing, and conducting in-depth media analyses to prepare briefings for management meetings and other documents for internal use. The Associate will administer the daily operations of the Department, and provide administrative support for the Director of Foreign Policy.

Scope: Far reaching, across the Foreign Policy department. At its core, this is a research and writing position. The associate will also be responsible for providing administrative support.

Impact: Assist with the Foreign Policy Director’s administrative requirements, including scheduling; assist the FP Director to be prepared to staff President Clinton so that the President is well-informed on international issues and all aspects of the Foundation’s work.


With guidance from the Director of Foreign Policy, and in coordination with other departments:

  • Research and draft briefings for international travel and meetings/events;
  • Compile weekly and biweekly reports on a variety of topics, and produce thorough and reliable vetting reports on individuals and organizations, with additional analysis and writing on an as-needed basis;

Proactively monitor topics important to the work of the Foundation’s international programs.

Administrative duties include filing of documents, preparing expense reports, conducting phone work, writing letters, and other administrative tasks as needed by the Director of Foreign Policy; 

Help manage the Director of Foreign Policy’s calendar; organize and schedule daily activities and meetings;

Arrange details of travel schedule; assemble and track travel expenses and reimbursements; communicate regularly with financial staff on details of reimbursements and expenses;

Handles mail and phone calls; receives visitors and staff.

Serve as a point of contact for the Foreign Policy Department internally. 

Provide timely, accurate, and concise responses to internal suggestions and requests. 

Maintain and expand databases on relevant subject matter, statistics, and forecasts as necessary

With guidance from the Director of Foreign Policy, assist the other Foreign Policy Associate in communicating in a timely manner with external parties, answering questions about the Foundation from foreign government officials, Foundation partners, individuals, and organizations.  

Serve as point of contact for the general public, fielding foreign policy related Foundation inquiries;

When appropriate, join the Director of Foreign Policy in meetings with external parties, take notes, summarize minutes, and assist in follow-up steps.


1. Education (Minimum Needed and Type of Degree Needed):

  • Minimum Required: Bachelors’ Degree in international affairs, business, law, or related field.
  • Preferred: Masters’ Degree preferred in international affairs, business, law, or related field.

2. Work Experience (Minimum Needed): 

  • Minimum Required: 2 years related work experience, preferably in private sector and/or international affairs

                    Preferred: Experience in organizing largescale events.

3. Specialized Knowledge Needed For Performance of Job: 

  • Strong interest in international affairs, including familiarity of international organizations and governments, private sector, and non-governmental organizations and global/regional trends.

4. Skills (e.g. Level of Judgment Required, Ability to Direct, Work Independently, Multi-Task, etc.): 

  • High level of judgment required, mature, and able to work autonomously, 
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Ability to effectively multi-task, manage a broad spectrum of responsibilities, meet tight deadlines, and remain calm / positive;
  • Experience providing administrative support and working closely with senior leadership in an office environment is a plus.
  • Possesses cultural sensitivity
  • Able to digest and synthesize large amounts of information quickly; 
  • Flexibility and superior prioritization, time management and troubleshooting skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and meet competing priorities in a fast-paced and culturally diverse environment.
  • Good organizational and planning skills and a keen attention to detail;

5. Special Skills (e.g. Technical, Advanced): 

  • Proficiency in MS Office, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

6. Other (Communication Skills, Mechanical Aptitude, Math Skills, Learning Skills, or Other Specific Skills Required): 

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills required; 
  • Understanding of international business, politics, development, and law helpful;
  • Prior exposure to a diverse, multi-cultural work environment desirable;
  • Highly-motivated, with a thirst for knowledge and ability to learn quickly
  • Foreign language proficiency helpful, particularly Spanish/French/Arabic.

7. Additional Comments: 

  • Ability to work in a varying schedule including nights, early mornings, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally, and work on multiple time zones, as necessary
