Citi is seeking a dynamic and qualified individual to join a small team of dedicated professionals in the Environmental and Social Risk Management (ESRM) Unit. This Unit is based in New York and responsible for global implementation of Citi’s ESRM Policy, including the Equator Principles ( The policy covers transactions and client relationships in industries with potential environmental and/or social risks, such as oil and gas, mining, power, infrastructure, forestry, and palm oil. The ESRM Unit assesses the environmental and social risks and impacts associated with client activities. In partnership with the client and consultants, ESRM determines appropriate mitigation measures to manage those risks. In emerging markets project-related transactions, projects are reviewed against the World Bank Group’s International Finance Corporation’s (IFC) Performance Standards and their 63 sector-specific Environmental Health and Safety guidelines. The new ESRM VP will report to Citi’s Director and Global Head of ESRM. 

Job Responsibilities The ideal candidate will be highly organized with a blend of international business experience and scientific knowledge. We are seeking an individual with superior ethics, project execution, research and client servicing skills, who is able to effectively communicate with a diverse array of internal and external stakeholders. Job responsibilities include:

  • Work with key banking units (e.g., Global Power, Energy, and Mining, Export and Agency Finance, Project and Infrastructure Finance), Corporate Sustainability, and Risk Management to assess and manage environmental and social risk, including:
    • Provide research and support on transaction reviews across a variety of sectors (metals and mining, oil and gas, forestry, power and other large infrastructure sectors), across all geographies
    • incorporate ESRM requirements and/or advisory capabilities in marketing letters and term sheets
    • participate in transaction approvals and advise on potential ESRM requirements for internal policy purposes as well as syndication
  • Using third party ESG data platforms, conduct corporate-level and portfolio-level reviews of high-risk sectors (i.e. extractives, agribusiness) to identify any clients that present elevated environmental, social or reputational risk
  • Research and write a bi-annual internal report for senior management that identifies sensitive projects and sectors with elevated environmental, social and/or reputational risk
  • Assist in database management of transactions and corporate reviews for quarterly and year-end reporting purposes
  • Occasional international travel required


  • Masters in Environmental Management/Policy/Science, International Relations (Development Studies emphasis), MBA (with a sustainable finance focus) or similar degree, or equivalent work experience required
  • 5+ years of work experience in a related field (risk assessment, environmental or social consultancy, in-house EHS or corporate sustainability team in industry, ESG research or screening, etc.) with experience working in an emerging markets context a plus. Less experienced qualified candidates may be considered for a Senior Associate role
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have a combination of scientific degree(s) and international business work experience
  • Strong written and oral communications skills
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously; well-organized and able to manage time given multiple priorities
  • Ability to work in a high performance environment, with short deadlines and shifting priorities
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Additional language skills a plus
  • Flexible, and a team player
  • Knowledge of international standards such as the World Bank Group / IFC standards, the UN Guiding Principles on Business and the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil a plus, but not required
