PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Program Context

MicroMentor is an initiative of Mercy Corps’ Innovations Team. MicroMentor.org is an online platform that connects entrepreneurs with business mentors. MicroMentor also partners with local economic development programs and corporate social responsibility programs to grow corporate volunteering activity in entrepreneurial communities.

Project Context

Our team is diverse, driven, hardworking and highly committed to the mission of helping small businesses thrive through mentoring. Our mission is to leverage the power of mentoring to help small businesses thrive. We do so by offering entrepreneurs direct access to a pool of committed professional mentors. MicroMentor has an expanding community of more than 30,000+ users and a record of more than 15,000 mentor-mentee matches. Every year our community of mentors grows by over 3,500, and makes over 10,000 connections a year, making MicroMentor one of the largest mentor networks in the world.

MicroMentor has recently secured two grants with a focus on Measurement & Evaluation to more formally document the impact of mentoring and the MicroMentor platform. We are working with these granting bodies, researchers, and our software engineers to more precisely define KPIs, arrive at consistent calculations, and prepare easy-to-access real-time (or near real-time) dashboards and reports that present these metrics to the team and other stakeholders in an accessible and actionable format. Datasources will minimally include: Google Analytics, mySQL database platform data, Salesforce CRM data, digital marketing data (adwords, facebook, email), and survey data collected with online tools. The Analytics & Data Operations Assistant will begin by developing a solid understanding of our Impact framework, theory of change, and website user experience. They will then assess and document our current systems, data architecture and desired KPIs. Finally they will help architect and implement a measurement system that can output metrics and reports which meet the needs of the team and other stakeholders.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

The intern will develop an understanding of web-based social platforms and how they use data to inform decision-making, research, and learning through analyzing data on MicroMentor user behavior. The intern will build practical skills in data analysis and using data to inform web software product management, user experience design, mentorship, and economic development programs operating in a global context. The intern may also learn more about entrepreneurship and economic development and Mercy Corps research projects by reviewing research studies and other relevant program documents. Finally, the intern may complete informational interviews with other Mercy Corps staff members working in his/her area(s) of interest, in order to increase his/her knowledge of Mercy Corps’ work in these areas.

Additional learning objectives may be negotiated with the intern, depending on skills, interests, and program needs.
