To date, projects inaugurated at the Berggruen Institute have helped develop a youth jobs plan for Europe, fostered a more open and constructive dialogue between Chinese leadership and the West, and strengthened the ballot initiative process in California. The Berggruen Institute partners with The Washington Post to produce The WorldPost, an award-winning global media platform. Additionally, the $1 million Berggruen Prize is conferred by an independent jury and awarded annually to a thinker whose ideas are helping to shape human self-understanding and advance humankind.

The Berggruen Institute is looking for a bright, creative, organized, and detail-oriented program coordinator to support the development and execution of the Institute’s public engagement events and activities.

The program coordinator will report directly to the Engagement Program Manager and will collaborate closely with the communication’s department and various other departments within the Institute. The program coordinator will be responsible for maintaining and improving programming processes and providing administrative support for domestic and international events and activities. In addition to supporting Institute’s wide range of programs, the program coordinator will also work on the Institute’s governance projects.

This role requires creativity and resourcefulness in executing events and activities as well as discretion in managing network relationships. The candidate must also be a self-starter who is able to multi-task, take initiative, and problem solve. He/she must also have extensive computer skills (Adobe Creative Suite, Word, and Excel a must), two-three years of experience in event / program management with an interest in international affairs and governance. Foreign language skills a plus.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist with the planning, coordinating, and executing of logistics for events, including coordinating technical and audio-visual needs, furniture rentals, catering, security, event parking, and other responsibilities such as posting directions and greeting guests
  • Coordinate event attendee’s travel and accommodations
  • Proof event scenarios, timelines, agendas, and itineraries
  • Research and draft event materials, including event briefs, participant biographies, event packets and other marketing materials
  • Draft documents for review such as emails, blog posts, and other digital content in coordination with the Engagement Program Manager
  • Engage with event attendees, speakers, and vendors
  • Review and ensure program budget compliance by assisting with tracking vendor contracts and invoices
  • Research and identify possible venues and vendors for future programming
  • Create proposals for future public programming
  • Research and summarize articles as they relate to event programming
  • Update and maintain SalesForce database



  • Two years of related work experience in event and/or program management
  • Ability to develop engaging communications for internal and external audiences across multiple mediums
  • Self-starter who is a proven team player with a positive attitude
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills with ability to multitask and adjust priorities as necessary
  • Ability to adapt to challenges and opportunities with a solution-oriented perspective
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient in Word with working knowledge of Excel, Outlook, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and SalesForce
  • Background in international affairs and governance
  • Ability to move, lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing less than or equal to 25 pounds without assistance. Able to stand, sit, or walk for an extended period-of-time.
  • Foreign language (French, Spanish, Mandarin) a plus

Additional Notes Related to Program Coordinator

  • This is a full-time, non-exempt position based in Los Angeles with possible travel to Europe and China for work related events (candidates must be able to travel inside and outside the United States, the European Union, and China).
  • Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
  • Some evening and weekend hours may be required.
