Position description

The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that seeks to improve systems of democracy and justice in the United States. We work to hold our political institutions and laws accountable to the twin American ideals of democracy and equal justice for all. Brennan Center’s work ranges from voting rights to campaign finance reform, from ending mass incarceration to preserving Constitutional protection in the fight against terrorism. Part think tank, part advocacy group, part cutting edge communications hub, we start with rigorous research. We craft innovative policies. And we fight for them – in Congress and the states, the courts, and in the court of public opinion. 

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Editorial Director, the Publications Editor will oversee the editorial production process for the organization’s reports, papers, and books. The Publications Editor will work closely with program and design staff to shepherd reports through the pre-production process; copyedit and proofread copy manuscripts and layouts; hire, manage, and evaluate freelancers; create and track schedules; and manage the approvals process.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees manuscript development from start to finish
  • Responsible for assessing requirements for each project; plans and schedules delivery of publication materials accordingly
  • Creates and manages publications schedules; plans, assigns, and tracks deliverables from program staff and freelance editors
  • Responsible for assemblage of publication materials including all texts and images in line with the requirements of the project 
  • Manages freelance editors
  • Enforces editorial guidelines for publications (house style, copyediting, proofreading)
  • Assists with content editing and digital/print production, as needed

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or greater required.
  • At least five years of experience as a Copy Editor or Publications Manager.
  • Strong copy editing, traffic management, headline writing, and overall organizational skills. The ideal candidate will be highly organized with a meticulous attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated editorial management skills, analytical skills, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong understanding of technical side of editorial tasks: familiarity with CMS tools and standards, experience with InCopy and InDesign.
  • Highly creative, with excellent, demonstrated editorial skills writing, editing, creative concepting, and an ability to understand and help implement design priorities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and thrive in a busy and dynamic work environment, juggling multiple projects.
  • Excellent news judgment.
  • An understanding of the Brennan Center’s mission and goals; democracy and justice; nonprofit experience a plus.
  • A strong opinion about the Oxford comma (pro or con, as long as you can back it up).
  • Sense of humor and ability to be a calm port in a storm.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with staff in other departments.
  • Passion for issues of democracy, justice, and the rule of law.
  • Strong writing skills and media savvy.
