Position description

Stanford University is seeking an Academic Program Professional 3 to work under broad direction of faculty or management to identify opportunities, develop strategy, and lead, implement, and administer large academic programs. Serve as expert advisor to faculty and staff and have a large role in program/entity strategy development, long-range planning, and partnership development.

Title: Philanthropy and Gender Equality Program Lead

Duration: 18 months (Summer 2020 – December 2021), potential for extension based on success of initiative

Background:
The Global Center for Gender Equality (GCfGE) at Stanford University aims to redefine the approach to global health and development by creating a multi-disciplinary and cross-cultural network of researchers, policy makers and practitioners to build on the evidence on what works to address gender inequalities, fill key gender data gaps and equip the next generations of global health and development leaders to tackle gender equality challenges. Our vision is to create opportunities for advancement of gender equality through gender transformative research, policy, leadership and programing that enable all people to achieve their full human potential.

Position Summary:
The Philanthropy and Gender Equality Program Lead (Academic Program Professional 3) will be responsible for building and leading a new pillar of work within the GCfGE. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual to build out a portfolio to support private philanthropist to incorporate an intersectional gender lens into their strategies and investments.

This position will work closely with the Director of Gender Integration to build out this program and
partner with private philanthropists and foundations to build intersectional gender considerations and gender equality outcomes into their organizations, programming and investments. Principal duties of this role include providing technical assistance in gender integration (e.g., gender analysis, development of gender action plans, design of results frameworks, etc.); designing, facilitating, and delivering training related to gender equality; and, developing new tools to disseminate learnings and support philanthropists in gender integration. The Program Lead will contribute to building out this core pillar of our Center. The selected candidate will also have a significant role in supporting other initiatives at the Global Center for Gender Equality at Stanford, including gender integration/mainstreaming, strategy development, long-range planning, identifying opportunities for growth, and partnership development. This position will be supporting an 18-month grant, with the potential for further extension.

The Program Lead must have deep expertise integrating an intersectional gender lens in the design, implementation, and analysis of international development programs and strategies. Strong candidates will have expertise in private philanthropy, participatory adult learning methodologies and feminist pedagogies, as well as programming experience in the Global South.

Job Duties:
The following is an illustrative list of duties the Program Lead will be asked to provide to partners and sponsors. The breakdown of duties will depend on the gender integration technical assistance requested; it is not expected that all of these activities will happen concurrently. 

Duties include*:
Leadership: 
 Co-create a vision and approach for this new pillar of work in partnership with the Director of Gender Integration and key Center staff. 
 Lead and oversee development, implementation, administration, and evaluation of our private philanthropy pillar. Oversee analysis, reporting, and program improvements. 
 Lead strategic planning for the grant and with partners working to enact gender transformative change.
 Represent the program to the broader university, external community, and other stakeholders. Provide expert consultation related to program development, funding opportunities, or other specialty area.
 Develop outreach strategy related to program communications, development, partnerships and fundraising/funding. Identify external funding opportunities and write proposals and research grants.
 Develop and oversee strategic financial planning and sustainability for the program/entity, as needed; monitor performance and ensure appropriate controls.
 Manage a bench of technical consultants that will be providing technical assistance to complement the expertise within the Center. 
 Coach and mentor program staff.

Gender Integration Technical Assistance:
 Establish a deep and evolving understanding of partners’ investment strategies and organizational structure in order to modulate technical assistance in alignment with partner needs.
 Provide wrap-around technical support to strategic investments that have been identified as exemplars for gender integration. 
 Provide informed, high quality, sector-specific technical assistance, including gender analysis and development of gender action plans, to support partners in gender-intentional and/or gender transformative investment and program design and implementation. 
 Assist partner teams to develop sector-specific M&E plans that can effectively capture progress or setbacks against gender equality goals. Provide support during investment and/or program evaluation phase to ensure learning from gender integration is included effectively. 
 Identify and advise on entry points for gender integration within additional investments, programs, and/or sector areas.
 Establish and maintain strong relationships and consistent communication with key partner staff, such as co-chairs of a foundation or family office staff.
 Dynamically adapt technical assistance delivery strategies based on partner feedback.

Capacity Building:
 Design face-to-face and virtual training that uses participatory, appreciative, and adult-learning approaches related to gender equality and female empowerment.
 Facilitate face-to-face and virtual workshops for a variety of clients.
 Provide one-on-one coaching support as needed to partner staff, and/or onboard new employees to gender integration approaches as needed.

Learnings dissemination:
 Working closely with a human-centered design firm to co-develop generic versions of partner-specific training modules and tools to be used by additional philanthropic and development organizations.
 Contribute to key documents, reports, and presentations on the gender integration learnings for a variety of purposes and audiences.
 Support the development of journal articles, blogs, and other communications to disseminate learnings.

Additional Responsibilities:
 Deliver presentations at conferences, events, and high-level meetings.
 Manage professional relationships with consultants and ensure delivery of high-quality outputs.
 Develop and lead site visits and field work internationally and domestically as needed.
 Manage multi-million-dollar grant budget and lead the development of a workplan.
 Ensure that all gender integration support products and training models represent a clear vision, consistent message and coherent approach to drive momentum in transformative gender equality. 
 Provide additional support as needed to the Director of Gender Integration and Executive Director of the Global Center for Gender Equality.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
 Strong relationship manager that inspires, activates and strategically engages ultra-high net worth individuals
 Deep expertise in gender analysis, integration and mainstreaming strategies in a development context.
 Proven ability to work with large funders and development organizations to apply an intersectional lens to gender integration across diverse bodies of work.
 Experience with gender program monitoring and evaluation, including the design of tracking systems, development of indicators, and mechanisms to capture gender-sensitive and gender-transformative data.
 In-depth understanding of international development processes, actors and cultures. 
 Expertise in participatory, feminist adult learning training theory and practice.
 Significant experience in designing and facilitating interactive meetings, workshops, and trainings.
 Strong understanding of, and personal commitment to, a rights-based approach to gender equality and international development. 
 Highly effective written and oral communication skills to address a wide variety of audiences.
 Excellent planning and organizational skills.
 High-level of emotional intelligence and the ability to thoughtfully meet needs and empathize with funders, philanthropists and partners. 
 Ability to work amidst ambiguity and thrive in a start-up mode, with initiative and comfort to work with little oversight and with team members in various locations.
 Ability to multi-task and manage deadlines.
 Ability to travel domestically and internationally at least 25% of the time. 
 Curious, flexible, team player and sense of humor.


Desired Qualifications:
 Advanced degree with 15+ years of experience in gender integration or mainstreaming, with at least some of it serving in a location in the Global South.
 Proven effectiveness/track record working with or fostering relationships with private philanthropists, large international development foundations or other funders.
 Effective relationship-building and collaboration skills with a diverse range of partners and donors, both in-person and virtually. 
 Dynamic and inspiring communicator who is comfortable presenting to private philanthropists and ultra-high net worth individuals. 
 Comfortable in a wide range of cultural, geographic and operational situations, demonstrating culturally sensitive behavior with a diverse range of people.
 Creative problem solver with rigorous approach and aptitude for managing details in fast-paced environment. 
 Ability to work in an additional language a plus.
