You’re a content strategy generalist—or at least willing to play one on TV. You’ve mastered all the basics and you’re eager to take on more responsibility. You have to toss a coin to decide whether Flash or the PDF is Adobe’s cardinal sin. You have Opinions on Brain Traffic’s content strategy quadrant. You love a good spreadsheet.

You’re excited about helping progressive research organizations use knowledge and ideas to make the world a more peaceful, prosperous, just, sustainable and equitable place. You don’t mind that most of your colleagues use the wrong size paper and mispronounce the letter You think I’ve never done that before sounds like a feature, not a bug. You are happy to work independently but aren’t afraid to ask for help when you encounter tricky issues—and you’re always willing to help colleagues find solutions when they get stuck.

Your skills and experience

  • A bachelor’s degree and at least two years’ experience in content strategy, marketing, library science, journalism, public relations or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least one year’s experience of delivering content strategy for websites and other digital platforms.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic familiarity with the full range of content strategy areas—editorial strategy, experience design, content operations, and content engineering—and a particular strength in at least one of those areas.
  • Experience constructing models (ecosystem, domain, or content models or ontologies) is particularly desirable.
  • Experience working with nonprofits or charities is helpful but not required. Experience working with policy-, science- or other research-focused organisations is especially useful.
  • Professional experience using web content management systems. Familiarity with Drupal or WordPress is highly desired, but some experience with a web CMS (e.g. Bolt, ExpressionEngine, Craft) is required.
  • Permission to work in the United States and a willingness to join our DC studio in person post-pandemic.

The job

We’re looking for an early career strategist to join our team in Washington DC. This is not an entry-level position. It is ideal for someone who has mastered junior-level tasks and is looking to take the next step in their career.

You’ll deliver a range of digital content strategy services on behalf of the agency, coordinating closely with colleagues working in design, web development, branding, client services and new business, as well as other members of the content team. 

Ours is a small (but growing) content team. While each member of the team does have particular specialties, the nature of our work requires that every member of the team must be capable of working across the full spectrum of content strategy activities. Key activities include:

  • Engaging closely with clients, their internal stakeholders, their target audiences and their existing content to develop new digital content strategies.
  • Developing new and updated information architecture and content models for clients’ websites.
  • Drafting outreach plans for a range of digital outputs.
  • Developing workflow and governance plans for clients.
  • Creating sample content and advising clients on the most effective ways to present their content in digital channels.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of content created for client websites (including the ways in which this is presented), measured against their strategic goals and key performance indicators.

Responsibilities in detail

  • Reviewing existing client documentation and running meetings, workshops, interviews and other types of consultation and engagement with clients to help understand their goals and requirements.
  • Carrying out analytics and site performance reviews.
  • Conducting content inventories and audits that inform recommendations about content improvement and migration.
  • Conducting and overseeing qualitative and quantitative user research.
  • Drafting briefs, generating personas and developing other documentation in discussion with clients, ensuring that these provide clients and third-party service providers with a sound basis for developing digital communications outputs.
  • Developing new and updated content schemas and sitemaps for clients’ websites.
  • Working with digital designers as they turn content strategy deliverables into design artefacts and with developers as they construct detailed requirements and functional specifications documentation.
  • Advising clients about improving content for findability and searchability. (Note: This is not an SEO job, but some high-level SEO knowledge is useful.)
  • Developing documentation and guides to assist clients in executing their content strategies.
  • Drafting sample content for client websites or other digital outreach channels.
  • Mapping and optimizing content workflows and governance processes.

General duties

  • Working with colleagues to maintain a spirit of creative collaboration across the disciplines working in digital communications and to develop new products and services that the agency can offer its clients.
  • Keeping up with and sharing current trends and innovations in digital content strategy and production, and learning new skills and contributing to new product development.
  • Representing the agency at events, writing blog posts and articles and taking other opportunities to communicate our mission and approach.
